Military presence in Argonne Park

The Argonne Park neighborhood in North Chicago is close to Lake Michigan and not far from suburban Chicago's more affluent North Shore neighborhoods. “The houses here tend to be more affordable than just a few miles south,” says Liz Scheffler, a broker/owner with Century 21 Circle with nearly 40 years of experience. “The real draw to living here is Naval Station Great Lakes is close. There are a lot of military families here.” Neighboring Argonne Park down Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, the military base spans 1,600 acres and is the U.S. Navy’s largest training station.

City of North Chicago’s plan to increase home ownership

North Chicago, under the comprehensive plan it adopted a decade ago, partnered with nonprofit developers to improve the conditions of homes in Argonne Park and other neighborhoods in the heart of the city. “This has been going on for the past 5 to 7 years. Before that, North Chicago was viewed as a second-class city,” Scheffler says. “Homes have either been renovated, or new ones have been built. There’s also been a focus on ensuring landlords and homeowners keep properties looking nice.” With the proximity of the naval base, there are still many renters in Argonne Park. While some homes have been renovated, and there are newer homes in the neighborhood, there are farmhouses and Cape Cods from the late 1800s or early 1900s. Ranch-style and split-level dwellings can also be found. Prices range from $9,000 to $260,000.

The Church of the Nazarene and First Church of our Lord Jesus Christ are houses of worship in the Argonne Park neighborhood.
