Pastoral serenity with urban amenities
The terms "Quaker" and "rebel" aren't typically used together. But the establishment of the town of Dartmouth was, in fact, the result of members of the Society of Friends rebelling against what they saw as overreach on the part of religious authorities in the newly established Massachusetts Bay Colony. Today, residents of North Dartmouth continue that legacy of personal freedom in North Dartmouth, a neighborhood that combines the serenity of country living with proximity to major urban centers. “It’s a community where people are incredibly friendly, but at the same time they mind their own business,” says local Realtor Kam Goldstone, himself a Dartmouth native. “Neighbors watch out for each other, but without prying.”
Out and about in North Dartmouth
Given the proximity to Buzzards Bay, it’s perhaps not surprising that waterfront activities are a primary draw for residents here. Both the historic New Bedford Waterfront area and East Beach are less than 5 miles away, providing easy access to the fascinating history of New Bedford’s days as one of the whaling capitals of the world and to the shores of the Atlantic. The New Bedford Waterfront is home to the New Bedford Whaling Museum, with exhibits that tell the story of the city’s rise to fame during its heyday as a launching point for 19th-century whalers. Visitors to East Beach are within walking distance of Fort Rodman, a Civil War-era fort with a military museum. Golfers here can tee off at the Country Club of New Bedford, which offers a variety of membership options.

Eat, shop and be merry
While much of the appeal of life in North Dartmouth may lie in outdoor activities, there are plenty of retail and dining offerings in the area. “North Dartmouth is a bit different from the coastal communities to the south,” says Realtor Ellie Wickes of Sotheby’s International Realty in Westport. “You’re going to see more big-box stores, shopping malls and supermarkets.” And with the commercial corridor of Route 6 serving as the neighborhood’s southern boundary, those amenities aren’t far away. With Shaw’s just a mile away, residents have easy access to grocery shopping, and home necessities are 2 miles away at Walmart Supercenter. When the need for retail therapy strikes, the Dartmouth Mall is just down the road, available to satisfy neighborhood residents’ desires.
If the thought of cooking at home doesn’t appeal after a day of activities, North Dartmouth offers plenty of restaurant options, too. Joe’s Original is a neighborhood staple, serving lunch and dinner in a funky setting, with red leather booths and eclectic artwork adorning the walls. Another local favorite is the Cask & Pig, a New England-style gastropub featuring a menu influenced by Southern barbecue, Portuguese cuisine and local ingredients, not to mention 24 beers on tap.

A limited housing supply
Situated amid the pastoral landscape of southern Massachusetts, North Dartmouth is a place where homes typically have larger lot sizes. “Because most of the subdivisions were built in the 1990s or even earlier, houses are built on larger parcels of land,” says Goldstone. “It’s not an area where developers had to build houses right on top of each other to make their money back.” Potential buyers need to be aware that homes don’t often come up for sale in North Dartmouth, and when they do, they are typically under contract within two weeks of being listed. “A lot of the homes there are passed on from generation to generation,” said Goldstone. “They don’t come up for sale very often.” The median price of real estate here is $450,000, and buyers should expect to pay an average of $323 per square foot. A two-bedroom/one-bathroom ranch-style home can sell for $285,000, and prices can go up to $575,000 for a three-bedroom/one-bathroom ranch-style home.
