Clairmont Heights
Clairmont Heights' large, wooded lots
Midcentury modern ranch styles and bungalows from the 1940s and '50s are common here. So are large, wooded lots. "People love that whole area because of the lot sizes and the nature around it," St George says. She adds that prices are higher than average due to the neighborhood's proximity to major hospitals and the Emory Campus. Single-family homes generally range from the high $300,000s for investment properties to the low $800,000s for something renovated. Condos ranging from the mid-$100,000s to the high $200,000s and townhouses from the mid-$300,000s to high $600,000s, settle on Clairmont Heights' western side.Homebuyers will find few homes for sale in Clairmont Heights. Pamela Hughes, a Realtor of over 40 years with Harry Norman Realtors, says this is because most people here have paid off their mortgages and have no desire to move. Though streams cross through Clairmont Heights, St George says the area is not prone to flooding. The neighborhood's CAP Index Crime Score is 5 out of 10, versus the national average of 4. The Decatur Police Department posts crime prevention tips on its website and encourages neighborhood watch initiatives.
Druid Hills High School earns an A-plus rating on Niche
While Clairmont Heights is zoned to DeKalb County Schools, Georgia’s participation in school choice provides more options for families. Within the neighborhood’s zoned district schools, students begin at Fernbank Elementary School, which earns a B-plus on Niche. From there, they filter into the B-rated Druid Hills Middle School and the A-plus-rated Druid Hills High School. The high school prepares students for the rigors of higher education through its International Baccalaureate and advanced placement programs. Emory University, less than 2 miles west, ranked 25th on U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 list for best universities nationwide.Friendly games of tennis at Mason Mill Park
“It’s basically all park. It’s surrounded by parks,” St George says when describing the natural appeal of Clairmont Heights. Melton Park is in the neighborhood with an over half-mile trail passing through forest and along streams. The South Peachtree Creek Trail is just north. It connects pedestrians to the nearby historic Decatur Waterworks ruins, Mason Mill Park and Medlock Park. Mason Mill Park is home to the DeKalb Tennis Center, an off-leash dog park and the Mason Mill Recreation Center, which offers a gym, playgrounds and picnic areas. The Central DeKalb Senior Center and a Jewish Family and Career Services branch are also there. Medlock Park hosts youth sports on its ball fields and batting cages. It also has a public swimming pool. The 28-acre Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve, less than 2 miles west, has seven distinctive trails through wetlands, pine forests and river bottomlands. Lullwater Preserve, on Emory’s campus, skirts Candler Lake. Its trails pass along a tumbling waterfall and the ruins of a 1920s mansion.
Brunch at Ms. Icey's Kitchen and Bar
There's shopping and dining in every direction of Clairmont Heights. The Southern cuisine and lively bar at Ms. Icey's Kitchen and Bar is just outside the neighborhood for brunch and dinner. Directly south of that is Community Q BBQ, a local favorite.St George says Tocco Hills Shopping Center, located a mile away, is popular with residents. "They have great restaurants there. There's a Publix and a Kroger, so two giant anchor grocery stores in one shopping center. And then they have a J.Crew outlet and a Sephora, but they also have little boutique shopping," she says. Downtown Decatur is known for its international restaurants. Hughes says the line at Taqueria del Sol starts at 5 p.m. and goes down the street.
Lulah Hills, a mixed-use space in development, will bring around 320,000 square feet of retail and restaurant options 2 miles west. "That is in such early stages. It has not generated that much excitement yet, but it will," Hughes says.
Bus stops through MARTA on Clairmont Road
Walking to nearby parks and places on Clairmont Road is possible, according to Hughes, but driving is easiest. Clairmont Road, or U.S. Route 23, flows south through the neighborhood to intersect with North Decatur Road and Interstate 78. Both roads are dotted by bus stops through Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA). The Joseph Maxwell Cleland Atlanta VA Medical Center is just outside the neighborhood. North Decatur Road leads to Emory University Hospital in about 2 miles and downtown Atlanta in just over 7.Full moon walks and s'mores roasts at Melton Park
Melton Park hosts rotating events from "bird strolls" with the park ranger to full moon walks and Tree Detectives! — a program that helps children identify tree species. Come October, the annual Fall Festival is also held at the park, bringing family fun that includes scavenger hunts and s'mores roasting under a blanket of stars.
