Neighbors chat and watch birds beneath the magnolias in Medlock Park

Decatur’s Medlock Park is the type of neighborhood where people check in on their older neighbors and gather near the creek for a chat during evening walks. The neighborhood association also works to cater to the needs of residents. Years ago, when the area had a lot of older residents, the neighborhood focused on senior involvement, hosting daytime activities for older neighbors. These days, as families with young children fill the neighborhood, the focus has turned to events like the annual Easter egg hunt.

The neighborhood, with its winding creek and wide magnolia trees, is also home to all types of birds. Kathryn Firago, a longtime resident and co-president of the neighborhood association, remembers two owlets living in a tree right across from her house recently. “I’ve never seen so much interest in two little baby birds in my life and it was so much fun,” she says. Neighbors would gather outside her house to watch them. “It was just fun to talk to them and get excited when the little birds fledged.”

A popular Halloween tradition

The Medlock Area Neighborhood Association hosts multiple annual events for the community, including a pool party in August. But none is more popular than their Halloween event, held a few days before the holiday. “We are becoming somewhat famous for our Haunted Trail,” Firago says. The event has been held for about a decade at the Clyde Shepherd Nature Preserve and last year drew close to 1,000 participants. Residents volunteer to decorate the preserve and man stations featuring mad scientists, witches and zombies. The early section of the trail is tame enough for young children while other “more gory” areas are fun for older visitors. The event draws participants from even outside the community and all proceeds benefit the nature preserve.
