Congregation Beth Jacob draws Jewish families to Merry Hills

Homes in Merry Hills sit along ironically named roads like Christmas Lane and Reindeer Drive in a neighborhood across from Atlanta's largest and oldest synagogue. Since Congregation Beth Jacob's members don’t use technology on the Sabbath, the community attracts Orthodox Jewish families seeking homes within walking distance of the synagogue off Lavista Road. In years since the synagogue's 1962 opening, kosher stores and Jewish schools have sprouted up nearby to offer Orthodox-friendly amenities. "It created this critical mass of people affiliated with the congregation who live here," says Rabbi Yitz Chandler, the synagogue's executive director. "It's one of the most attractive and sought-after areas in the country for religiously observant Jewish families who want to have all of the benefits of living in a city but also be close to institutions that service their religious life." Homebuyers are also drawn by the neighborhood’s proximity to the popular Toco Hill Shopping Center, parks and major highways.

Ranch-style homes and new builds on large lots in Merry Hills

A little over a third of Merry Hills' housing consists of apartments, and the rest are primarily midcentury single-family dwellings. Ranch-style homes sell for $450,000 to $800,000. Larger Craftsman styles, new builds and traditional designs cost $800,000 to $1 million. "It's a good mixture of both," says area resident Juli St George, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty Intown. Many houses have full basements and sit on deep lots that are a half-acre or more in size. "A lot of homes have beautiful gardens,” St George says. “People really have a lot of pride in their homes and neighborhood." Townhouses along Lavista, North Druid Hills and Briarcliff roads sell for $545,000 to $685,000.

Less than a mile from the neighborhood, the Toco Hill Shopping Center on North Druid Hills Road is a one-stop shop for anything from restaurants to beauty supplies. Other restaurants range on the international spectrum, including kosher Italian dishes at Formaggio Mio Restaurant and Indian street food at Masti. At Wild Haven Beer, locals can enjoy barbecue and beer in an outdoor courtyard surrounded by trees and mural-lined walls. Kosher groceries are available at Publix, Kroger and Spicy Peach. The shopping center also includes a hardware store and bookshop, as well as Pike Nurseries for the neighborhood's many avid gardeners.
