Belleville's bodies of water
Belleville was founded in the early 1800s when Belleville Pond and Secret Lake were formed from the Shewatuck River. It was the site of a sawmill and gristmill, which later shifted to cotton manufacturing before burning down in the 20th century. Once industrial, the neighborhood is now home to an ample green space and small, quiet residential clusters, which are common in North Kingstown. “The main reason people move into the town is because of the school system and being on the water,” says Toby Kimball, a Realtor with Residential Properties LTD who grew up in South Kingstown. Colonel Rodman Highway borders the neighborhood to the west and connects to Interstate 95, so commuters reach Providence in less than 40 minutes.
Belleville's rich history traces back to the 1800s with a sawmill, gristmill, and cotton manufacturing.

River herring at Ryan Park
Ryan Park’s flat trails are frequently used by hikers looking for a scenic adventure. The 350-arce green space is surrounded by woodlands and has a wooden passenger bridge over Belleville Pond. There, anglers can fish for Rhode Island bass. The Rhode Island chapter of The Nature Conservancy recently restored the pond’s fish ladder to increase the number of river herring, which is essential to the local ecosystem. Boaters have a ramp to access the water. "The area has a lot of marinas with access to Narragansett Bay, so that's one draw,” Kimball says.
