Hamilton's history as a mill village

Hamilton is a historic section of North Kingstown known as one of New England's oldest industrial sites. It was originally known as Bissell's Mills when a gristmill opened in the neighborhood in the late 1600s. The mill was used for textile production for almost 130 years until it closed in 1978. Almost a decade later, it was converted into condos. Today, it is a quiet residential area surrounded by an undeveloped conservation area. It is bordered by Bissel Cove to the east. In certain months, migrating seals can be spotted in the water.

The migrating seals at Rome Point

A large portion of the neighborhood consists of undeveloped conservation land. "The John H. Chafee Nature Preserve has a lot of walking trails; it's a beautiful area," Kimball says. Sometimes, the area is also known as Rome Point, where the shoreline of the Narragansett Bay is used for fishing, boating and clamming. Seals migrating from Maine to Canada hang out on the rocks of Rome Point between November and March.
