Wickford Point
Outdoor activities on the water and on foot in Wickford Point
Cocumscussoc State Park is in the center of the neighborhood. An undeveloped park, it lacks maintained trails or annual clean-ups. Visitors can hike 3 miles of unmarked path or, during hunting season, go hunting in required blaze orange. Wilson Park spans almost 50 acres, borders the coast and is walkable from some homes in the neighborhood. Visitors can take their children to the playground or walk on various trails. Basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, baseball and softball fields and courts occasionally host recreational sporting leagues. Visitors can also launch their kayak or canoe from the park’s boat launch. “If you want a taste of the water, this neighborhood has an awful lot,” says Harding. Kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing are incredibly popular here. “The water is calm in the bay,” says Harding. “You can kayak or paddleboard to little islands or sandbars.” Newport, which is just across the bay, is the sailing capital of the world, and many residents store their boats in marinas along the shore.New England-style architecture in Wickford Point
Buyers can find modest, single-family homes – ranch-style properties or Cape Cods – starting around $400,000, while more expansive properties, especially those with bay views, climb into the millions. Further inland, for $500,000 to $700,000, expect Colonial Revival properties with well-maintained yards. Closer to the coast, yard sizes get smaller, and prices get higher. Starting in the high $900,000 range, these properties include classic New England architectural features, like clapboard siding, bay windows and decorative gables. "The market is very healthy," says Harding. "If priced right, homes will sell swiftly."Holiday festivities in Wickford Point
During the holiday season, Wickford Village hosts The Festival of Lights, which begins when the Christmas tree is lit in early December. For the rest of the month, the village is illuminated with white lights, and store owners decorate their windowfronts with seasonal displays, competing for awards. During the festival, which takes place over the course of a weekend, Harding says, “Santa arrives on a Lobster boat.”Shopping and dining in Wickford Point
Wickford Village, along Main Street, is a great place to spend a weekend afternoon window shopping. Inside Colonial- and Federal-era buildings are local shops and restaurants. As boats float past in the harbor, step into antique shops, galleries and boutique stores. Dine on the coast at Wickford on the Water, where customers can enjoy seafood while looking at the shoreline from the restaurant’s shaded deck area. To grab groceries, head to Dave’s Fresh Marketplace on Tower Hill Road, and just north of the neighborhood, The Shoppes at Quonset Point on Gate Road offer big-box stores and chain restaurants, like HomeGoods, Chipotle, Kohl’s and more.Wickford Point public education options get straight A's
