Coastal neighborhood popular among vacationers and full-time residents

Ideally situated on North Myrtle Beach’s waterfront, Ocean Drive has high-rise condos, golf courses and an entertainment pavilion, making it a popular vacation destination on South Carolina’s Grand Strand. “Ocean Drive, beside Cherry Grove, is one of the most popular beaches in our area,” says Kemp Nash, Realtor at Century 21 Coastal Lifestyles and lifelong North Myrtle Beach resident. “It has Main Street, which is like the center of town. There are tons of shops, restaurants, ice cream, and they have festivals.”

Although much of this area is geared toward visitors, locals also enjoy the neighborhood's coastal offerings. “For people who live here, we live a bit further back in some of these quiet neighborhoods. You’d never know you’re at the beach until you leave the neighborhood,” says John Campbell, local resident and Realtor at Century 21 Thomas.

Buying options include condos, cottages and luxury builds

Two-bedroom condo units on the water start at around $200,000 and reach up to $450,000. Smaller houses, such as coastal cottages and ranch-style properties, often sell for between $300,000 and $500,000. Larger homes with modern finishes start around $700,000, and luxury waterfront homes can reach well into the millions.  Residential neighborhoods in Ocean Drive include the popular Tilghman Estates. Located near the Surf Golf & Beach Club and bordering Cherry Grove, this area has brick homes built in the 1970s and ‘80s. “From top to bottom, it’s hard to find a bad spot in North Myrtle Beach,” Campbell says. “But Tilghman Estates is one of my favorites. It starts a street back from the beach and has older homes on large lots.”

Some properties may require flood insurance

Some properties in Ocean Drive, especially along the waterfront, are in a flood zone. Property owners living in areas classified as “A” or “AE” high-risk flood areas by FEMA are usually required by mortgage lenders to purchase flood insurance. “Flood insurance can be five to 10 grand each year,” Nash says.

Outdoor fun on the beach and several golf courses

Whether in an oceanfront high-rise or tucked-away neighborhood, Ocean Drive residents are never far from the water. Beachgoers can lay out on the white sand and listen to the waves, drop their boat into the Intracoastal Waterway, or venture to Cherry Grove Point, where the inlet meets the ocean on the far end of town. “The Point is a great place to walk your dogs. On low tide, you can walk out for hundreds of yards,” Campbell says. Surf Golf & Beach Club, the only private golf course in North Myrtle Beach, has 18 holes spanning 200 acres of gently rolling, manicured terrain. Azalea Sands Golf Club is one of several public courses nearby.

Festivals, bars and big box stores are a quick walk or golf cart ride away

Ocean Drive Pavilion has restaurants, bars and businesses in the neighborhood, and Walmart and Aldi are among the big box stores off Highway 17. “Everything in North Myrtle Beach is really condensed. You can walk around, bike, golf cart around, and feel comfortable the whole time,” Campbell says. “People [visiting] park their car and don’t get back into their car until they’re ready to go home.”

At the OD Pavilion, locals and visitors can order decadent scoops of ice cream at Melt, grab a bite and play games at OD Arcade & Lounge, or learn how to dance the shag at Fat Harold’s Beach Club. Fat Harold’s is one of the hosts of the SOS festival, a biannual, 10-day shag event. Crowds gather to learn South Carolina’s state dance and watch performances. The pavilion hosts other gatherings like the annual St. Patrick's Day Parade & Festival and Ocean Drive Beach Music Festival. For more shopping and dining, Barefoot Landing has dozens of shops and restaurants 5 miles down the road.

Horry County Schools and a Catholic elementary school in the neighborhood

Students living in the neighborhood are zoned to attend Ocean Drive Elementary School, which has an A rating from Niche. Students may also attend Holy Trinity Catholic School, a private institution with an A from Niche that teaches pre-K through fifth grade. Public school students continue to North Myrtle Beach Middle School, which has an A-minus rating, and North Myrtle Beach High School, which has a B-plus. Niche awards the high school an A-minus in the athletics category. Among other wins, the high school’s girls' volleyball team won the state division championship in 2024, and the boys' baseball team won the regional championship in 2025.

Driving to Myrtle Beach from Ocean Drive on Route 17 and Highway 31

Drivers can reach Myrtle Beach, 15 miles away, on U.S. Route 17 or South Carolina Highway 31. Route 17 leads to the North Carolina state border, 8 miles away. Myrtle Beach is also home to the closest international airport, about 25 miles from Ocean Drive. Locals find medical facilities closer to home, with the McLeod Seacoast Hospital and North Strand Emergency Room both conveniently located in North Myrtle Beach.
