Windy Hill offers a cozy, residential environment in North Myrtle Beach
Behind the high-rise and mid-rise condos lining Windy Hill's beachfront, quiet residential streets lined with shade trees create an established feel. Windy Hill is one of North Myrtle Beach’s more residential enclaves, but it’s still just steps away from the ocean and popular shopping and entertainment attractions like Barefoot Landing. “It’s like a vintage beach town,” says John Campbell, North Myrtle Beach resident and Realtor at Century 21 Thomas. “There are some really cool, old, beautiful homes.”
Locals have their pick of coastal recreation
Vacationers and residents enjoy direct beach access in Windy Hill. When they’re not catching rays on the white-sand beach, locals can drop a kayak or fishing line into the nearby Intracoastal Waterway, or tee off at one of Barefoot Resort & Golf’s four public courses. Yow Park also has picnic tables and a playground for neighborhood families.
Modest coastal homes sit behind high-rise condos
Two-bedroom condo units facing the water typically sell for between $200,000 and $600,000, and smaller properties include ranch-style homes and cottages. “It’s what you think of when you think of a beach home, not these huge, ten-bedroom things they’re putting up now,” Campbell says. These smaller, single-family properties typically start at $220,000 and reach around $600,000. A handful of larger homes closer to the water can go for upward of $1 million. Potential homebuyers should note that some of Windy Hill is in a flood zone, meaning property owners may be required to purchase flood insurance as part of their mortgage agreement.
Shopping, dining and attractions at venues like Barefoot Landing
Bordering the neighborhood, dozens of restaurants, shops and entertainment venues surround a manmade lake in Barefoot Landing. Here, locals and visitors can chow down on pub grub and Southern food at Dick’s Last Resort, sample beer flights overlooking the lake at Crooked Hammock Brewery or pick up souvenirs at shops like Tiki Jim’s. During the on-season, Barefoot Landing has frequent events that include nightly live music, entertainers and weekly fireworks.
For daily errands, there’s Walgreens, Food Lion and more restaurants nearby off Route 17. North Myrtle Beach’s downtown area along Main Street and Ocean Drive Pavilion also have businesses and bars about 4 miles away. “Windy Hill doesn’t have any kind of Main Street, but all of that stuff is available to [residents]. It’s just a few blocks away,” Campbell says.
Most households zoned for North Horry County Schools
Most of the neighborhood is zoned for Ocean Drive Elementary School, which receives an A rating from Niche. North Myrtle Beach Middle School has an A-minus. North Myrtle Beach High School has a B-plus overall and an A-minus in the sports category. The high school’s boys' baseball team earned the regional championship title in 2024, and the girls' volleyball team won the 2024 state division championship.
Myrtle Beach is a quick drive away via Route 17
Windy Hill borders the town of Myrtle Beach. Downtown Myrtle Beach is about 12 miles away, and drivers can get there on U.S. Route 17. Myrtle Beach International Airport is a bit further away, about 16 miles from Windy Hill. Residents find medical care nearby in North Myrtle Beach, including the North Strand Emergency Room and McLeod Seacoast Hospital.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
