North Oaks puts private living at the forefront

North Oaks is a picturesque suburb in the northeastern Twin Cities area. Known for its private streets and a wide variety of homes — from 1950s ramblers to modern custom estates — the community can feel separate from the rest of the region, which appeals to many buyers. Residents have access to miles of scenic trails, as well as lakes and parks, and community festivals reflect the area’s farming roots. The city’s location near major highways and highly regarded school districts also adds to its appeal.

What people often pay for mid-1900s ramblers and contemporary homes

North Oaks is not a gated community, but it has the feeling of one. Property lines extend halfway across the street, meaning every road in town is privately owned and reserved for residents and their guests. Everything is maintained by the North Oaks Home Owners' Association. There’s not even door-to-door delivery; people pick up their mail at the post office. The area’s housing stock includes ramblers, split-levels and Tudor-style homes from the mid-1900s, as well as contemporary homes and custom estates. Prices range from the lower $600,000s for a rambler to about $2.5 million for a larger mansion. There are also New Traditional townhouses that can run from the lower $500,000s to more than $1.5 million. The community’s HOA fees often fall between $150 and $500 per month. The city tends to be much more expensive than surrounding areas like Shoreview, White Bear Lake and Lino Lakes.

Residents can use the city's hiking trails, lakes and parks

North Oaks has more than 30 miles of trails cutting through forests and prairies, sometimes with lakeside views. Residents can use them for hiking, biking, running, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Pleasant Lake, the largest in the area, is home to a beach open for swimming, boating and picnicking. It also has a playground. There are also more traditional green spaces: The West Recreational Area has ice rinks and sports fields, the East Recreational Area is for tennis and pickleball, and the Southpointe Recreational Area provides baseball and soccer fields. There are also community gardens and a bandshell near Wilkinson Lake. Residents who choose to join the private North Oaks Golf Club can access its 18-hole course, but membership is an additional fee and requires an application.

Students are split between two highly rated school districts

North Oaks is split between two school districts. Most students fall under Mounds View Public Schools, a highly rated district, and its Chippewa Middle School is in the area. Students in the eastern half of the city may be zoned for White Bear Lake Area Schools, which is also highly rated. Other options include the top-rated Oak Hill Montessori School, which is just outside the city.

Community events are often rooted in the area's farming history

The community hosts several celebrations throughout the year, some tied to the legacy of the James J. Hill Farm, which eventually became North Oaks. Some of the most popular ones include:

  • Farm Fest, a residents-only September festival at the historic farm with live music, games, blacksmith demonstrations and a petting zoo
  • Ice Cream Social, a summer gathering at the farm where frozen treats cost just $1
  • Spring Dinner, a cocktail hour and meal at North Oaks Golf Club with a guest speaker tied to the city’s history

Easy access to Minneapolis and Saint Paul

Nearby interstates 35E and 694 connect the area to the rest of the Twin Cities. Downtown Saint Paul is just over 10 miles away, a commute that takes 15-25 minutes on average. Downtown Minneapolis is close to 15 miles away, or a 20- to 35-minute drive. Metro Transit provides bus service to the area, with several stops along Hodgson Road.
