North Pekin/Marquette Heights
Lot sizes vary
Most homes in the neighborhood are ranch-style homes built between the 1940s and 1970s, but there are some post-2000 builds. Homes are often situated on winding, suburban streets lined with trees and sidewalks. Some houses have one-car garages, but many have detached garages set back behind the home. Some homes along the neighborhood's outskirts are built on more rural lots with multiple acres. Three-bedroom homes with about 1,000 square feet of space or less regularly sell for under $100,000, while newer homes with twice the space sell for closer to $200,000.Recently renovated high school
Kids in the neighborhood start off at North Pekin-Marquette Heights School District No. 102 schools, like Marquette Elementary School, which serves prekindergarten through third grades and is rated B-minus by Niche; and Georgetowne Middle School, which serves fourth through eighth grades and is rated B-minus. For high school, students attend Pekin Community High School, which is in the Pekin Community High School District #303. The school serves ninth through twelfth grades and is rated B-minus. Pekin Community High School recently received more than $10 million in renovations, including a new, more secure entryway, a new commons area, renovated athletic fields, and a remodeled gym and weight room.More than 700 acres of parkland
In addition to the smaller neighborhood parks, which include Marquette Heights Park, Richard Morrissey Park, John Spurlock Park, Eagle Dog Park, and Billy Myers Park, two quite expansive parks serve the community. Independence Park offers 340 acres and 12 miles of trails to explore. Dirksen Park has 400 acres of woodland and meadows, an archery range, and a remote-control airfield for flying drones and RC airplanes.Local shopping, dining and entertainment
Most of the neighborhood’s shopping and dining is concentrated around Route 29. Most restaurants are chains; residents can grab a slice of Chicago-style pizza at Rosati’s Pizza or a shaved ice at Kona Ice. Shopping options are limited, but a Dollar Tree is in the neighborhood for last-minute needs. For groceries, residents can head about 5 miles south to downtown Pekin to shop at Kroger or Schnucks or 5 miles north to East Peoria for several more options like Target, Costco, and Aldi. For a night out, residents who want to stay close to home can catch a movie at the local AMC movie theater or get a group together to play a few rounds at Striketown Bowl.A spooky Halloween season
Every year, the Marquette Heights Men’s Club of Central IL presents Spook Hollow, a haunted attraction that has been running for 45 years. The event has ranked on several “Best of” lists both statewide and nationally.Getting to Pekin and Peoria
Bordered to the north by Interstate 474, the neighborhood offers easy highway access. “That’s a big draw to that area,” Ladendorf says. Public transportation is limited; the Greater Peoria Mass Transit District operates one bus route that connects residents to downtown Pekin and downtown Peoria, with one stop in the neighborhood along Route 29.
