Myakka City
Homes sit on multiacre lots
As Myakka City is a rural community, “most properties here are farms on at least 5 acres of land,” says retired Realtor and lifelong Myakka resident Barbara Anson. Closer to the center of Myakka, the houses sit nearer to one another on smaller lots. Ranch-style homes and bungalows mix with New Traditionals, and while many homes were built in the 1990s and 2000s, some date back to the 1960s. Prices for smaller houses range from $450,000 to $900,000, while larger estates can go for $900,000 to over $1.5 million. Parcels of land typically range from 5 to 10 acres, and acreage price can vary widely, from around $12,000 to well over $100,000 per acre. There are also new developments popping up in Mykka City. The Soleta Golf community, which is scheduled to break ground in late 2024, will have 93 custom-built estates centered around an 18-hole golf course designed by Nick Price. Other amenities will include a high-end golf practice and performance facility. Another is The Estates at TerraNova, a gated community designed around the TerraNova Equestrian Center, which hosts competitions throughout the year. Planned are 182 custom-built estates that will be set on at least 5 acres. Prices for both communities are yet to be set. One model home in TerraNova Estates sits on about 15 acres with a pool and a stable and is listed at $9.95 million.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency states that Myakka City has a very high risk of hurricanes and a relatively moderate risk of flooding. Flood insurance is recommended for everyone and is required for anyone with a federally backed mortgage.
Nearby parks include Myakka River State Park
Parks and nature preserves surround Myakka City, including Myakka River State Park, whose river winds through 58 square miles of wetlands, prairies and pinelands. Hikers and cyclists can stay dry on the miles of trails and backroads, while there are also opportunities for boating, fishing and kayaking. Another is Wingate Creek State Park, which spans 614 acres with fields filled with flowering plants like pine lilies and terrestrial orchids in the fall. Come springtime, visitors can observe the endangered scrub morning glory, a large vine with big blue flowers. A handful of wildlife preserves surround Myakka City, including the Lemur Conservation Foundation, which allows lemurs free reign of nearly 10 acres of habitat. In town, Myakka Community Park sits on 18 acres and includes a playground, softball and soccer fields and a half-mile walking trail.Farm-fresh dairy goods at Dakin Dairy Farm
In Myakka City, much of which is made up of farmland, food is never far from its source. Dakin Dairy Farm, owned by Shelly Dakin and her family, is one of the area's biggest farms and a popular stop for families, thanks to its farm tours. The on-site market sells fresh dairy products, while decadent milkshakes and ice cream are on offer at Dakin Moofè. Its cafe, Pete’s Place, uses many farm-fresh ingredients, like the cheese on its pulled pork sandwich. Popular local restaurants include Myakka City Tavern & Grill for burgers and wings-- “it's where everyone goes,” Dakin says--and the family-owned Silver Star East Restaurant. While there is a Dollar General and a limited selection of goods at the Myakka City Grocery, which is also a gas station, many residents travel to Sarasota to shop. Aldi is about 16 miles away; Target, Home Depot and Walmart are within 25 miles.Myakka City Elementary plays active community role
Myakka City is part of the Manatee County School District. Myakka City Elementary, which receives a B-minus grade from Niche, is more than just a school. “Myakka City Elementary School is the heart of the community,” says Anson, who points to events like the one on Veterans Day, where students sing to veterans and share their appreciation before enjoying lunch. Both Dr. Mona Jain Middle and Lakewood Ranch High earn an A-minus. At the high school, students can earn Industry Certifications through Career and Technical Education (CTE) electives, including horticulture and animal sciences. The district also offers postsecondary education through Manatee Technical College. Programs include GED preparation and CTE courses.Myakka Co-op sells local artisan goods
Myakka City residents often come together for community events, be it a fundraiser for a neighbor, a trip to the monthly co-op or the annual Sarasota Medieval Fair. The Myakka Co-op gives creatives in the area a chance to display their wares while raising money for nearby animal sanctuaries and collecting donations for food banks. It is held on the first Saturday of the month from September through April, in the parking lot next to Silver Star East. Throughout November, locals and visitors alike gather at the Sarasota Medieval Fair. Attendees can cheer on actors in a joust, learn about traditional farming techniques and try their hand at archery. Anyone over 21 can participate in the Pub Crawl to sample meads, wines and ciders while enjoying live music.Downtown Sarasota is about a 25-mile drive
State Route 70 runs through the community and connects to Interstate 75. Downtown Sarasota is about 25 miles west and it's a few miles more to Gulf beaches like Siesta Key. The Sarasota Bradenton International Airport is about 40 miles away. The closest emergency room is at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, about a 20-mile drive.
