More elbow room for North Reading homeowners
North Reading is a rural refuge located about 18 miles north of Boston. Though a smattering of homes built in the 1700s remain as nods to the town’s heritage, buyers can also find a good selection of newly built custom homes tucked within tree-lined neighborhoods. “Most lots are at least an acre, so there’s a lot of elbow room,” says Kimberly Zecher, Realtor with Compass Massachusetts and resident of North Reading for more than 20 years. “It’s also a family-oriented town.” The town’s public school system is highly rated and has strong performing arts and world language programs. With several parks and youth activities, residents of all ages have plenty of opportunities to stay active. Restaurants located throughout town also offer options for an evening out.

A-rated North Reading elementary schools and nearby Phillips Academy Andover
One of the big draws for families is North Reading’s school system. The district has three elementary schools: L.D. Batchelder, J. Turner Hood and E. Ethel Little, all of which earn an A on Niche. After completing their primary education, students may attend A-rated North Reading Middle School and North Reading High School, which scores an A-minus. The middle and high schools share a 275,000-square-foot complex that includes a gymnasium, a performing arts center and a library. Students at the high school can study world languages — those who perfect their second language skills can earn a Seal of Biliteracy. Those looking for private options can find Phillips Academy Andover about 6 miles away. Niche rates it the No. 1 private school in Massachusetts.

Ipswich Park is a center for outdoor recreation
North Reading, despite its small size, is loaded with activities and recreation. Ipswich River Park is one of the top destinations for outdoor recreation. The facility stretches 49 acres, and its athletic fields serve as a site for local youth soccer and baseball games. Among the park’s other features are a street hockey rink and a 2-mile walking trail. Kayakers can launch into the Ipswich River from the park, too. Golfers can use the Hillview Golf Course, an 18-hole public course owned by the town, or join the Thomson Country Club for access to their course. Anglers, meanwhile, can find respite at the 89-acre Martins Pond, which is periodically stocked with bass. Zecher says that it also has a large playground and recreational area. On warm summer days, members of Resorts North can enjoy a swim in their pool. Additionally, the Flint Memorial Library offers a full array of programs for teens and pre-teens, including multicultural meetups, board game nights and a podcasting club.

Food trucks and fun at Ipswich Park
In June and July, residents can head to Ipswich River Park for a Wednesday-night food truck and concert series, Zecher says. Barbecue nights are family-friendly, with youth entertainment preceding the music. In April, spring cleaning is followed by the Annual North Reading Town Wide Yard Sale. Proceeds for site rentals help to fund events at the local senior center. The Apple Festival in September is a chance for citizens to test their hand at baking apple pies and tour North Reading’s most historic buildings. “On Thanksgiving morning, there is a turkey trot race. Families come out and run it as a group,” Zecher says.

Kitty's is the beating heart of North Reading
Main Street is the town’s primary commercial thoroughfare. Along it is Kitty's Restaurant & Lounge. “People come from miles and miles to go to Kitty’s,” Zecher says. “It’s the beating heart of North Reading.” The Horseshoe Grill, a barbecue restaurant that dates back to the 1920s, is another popular stop on Main Street. Those looking for a high-end steakhouse can head to Teresa's Prime Steakhouse, located beside the Thomson Country Club. On Wednesday nights, residents can show off their trivia knowledge at Hopothecary Ales Brewery and Kitchen, which Zecher says has a substantial menu of food to complement the fresh beer selection. Locals can pick up groceries at Stop & Shop or head into nearby Reading or Andover for more options. “If we don’t have something in town, we can easily access it within a short drive,” Zecher says.
