An active community with a historic Main Street

With its historic downtown, complete with a white-steepled chapel and brick colonials, Northborough has the nostalgic feel of a classic Massachusetts town. “It’s still a place where local politics and the town board have a big impact. What we’re running up against now is the board has become anti-growth,” says Michael Durkin, a Realtor with Realtor at Laer Realty Partners who has lived in Northborough for decades. “You need growth to support the diverse services people enjoy, so I think sentiments will turn a corner in the next couple of years,” Durkin adds. Though Northborough acts as a bedroom community for Worcester and Boston, there is an array of services in the area, including several Hindu temples to the south, the town’s senior center and an extensive network of nature trails. Children attend highly rated schools, and residents can spend weekends at local restaurants or exploring nature preserves.

Local businesses on West Main

Residents head to West Main Street to grab a bite at popular local restaurants or support small businesses. For lunch, residents can grab a steak and cheese or gyro sandwich with fries from Hillside Grill. They can enjoy margaritas and classic Mexican fare at El Rancho Corona. “Romaine’s is the destination of choice for a nice dinner out in Northborough,” Durkin says. To the south, residents can shop for groceries and essentials at big box stores like Walmart and Target, but they can also drive to the Northborough Crossing shopping plaza for Wegmans. While they’re at the shopping mall, locals can flip through the racks at Old Navy, Kohl’s, T.J. Maxx and other retailers.

Neighbors mingle at Applefest

Northborough CultureFest, held during the summer, showcases local art programs with artist booths, music and dance performances, a collaborative art project and local food vendors. “Applefest is our biggest community event. It goes for four days in mid-September, and vendors come from all over to set up booths,” Durkin says. “It honors the town’s history in the apple industry in the 17 and 1800s.” The celebration starts apple picking season on a festive note with a magic show, classic car show, farmers market, parade, fireworks show and more. During the summer, locals grab picnic blankets and lawn chairs to listen to the town’s concert series at Ellsworth McAfee Park.

Stately homes among nature

Colonial Revivals are common in Northborough, along peaceful streets of wide green lawns and picket fences. Most of the homes were built in the mid-to-late 20th century, but along Main Street, there are still some antique colonials from the 1700s. Ranches, bilevels and smaller Cape Cods cost between $400,000 and $600,000. Prices for striking Colonial Revivals in shaded subdivisions start around $800,000 and rise to $2.1 million.

Peaceful trails and pocket parks downtown

The landscape around Northborough consists of dense forests peppered with ponds and pocket parks, making for robust outdoor recreational opportunities. Downtown, the Northborough Town Common offers a manicured green space with benches to enjoy a relaxing moment at the town’s core. Families enjoy the large playground at Assabet Park, which recently added a splash pad for kids to cool off in the summer. To the east, the Wayne F. McCallum Wildlife Management Area has over 900 acres of grasslands and forests to explore. Hikers can hit the nature trails to go birding, while fishers enjoy access to the Assabet River and Lake Chauncy. Residents can also play rounds of golf at the public Indian Meadows Golf Club, and the gradual slopes 4 miles south offer additional recreation. “Pretty much everyone grew up learning to ski at Ski Ward,” Durkin says. In the colder months, locals can go snow tubing or skiing at the Ward Ski Area.
