Green spaces and lake living draw residents to Northfield Township
About 10 miles north of Ann Arbor, Northfield Township is a community of about 8,500 in Washtenaw County. "Folks like the location," says Steve Gronow, the owner of Chestnut Development and Real Estate. "You're just enough outside the edge of the hubbub where it's calm. But in less than 10 minutes, you can be anywhere you want in Ann Arbor." In addition to its location, the area has the added benefit of large collections of green space, including public parks and golf courses. The most coveted space in the township might be the one surrounding Whitmore Lake in the north. "It's a bit of a focal point," says Tracy Rose of Reinhart Realtors. "It's a vibrant area for people attracted to lake living."

Prices rise with acreage and cabin-style homes in the south
The most densely populated area surrounds Whitmore Lake in the northwestern region. Neighborhoods here are more traditionally suburban, with attached garages and fenced-in backyards on lots that can reach an acre in size. Turn-of-the-20th-century and midcentury homes, including Cape Cod, colonial and ranch-style architecture, are the most common here. Sales typically fall between $160,000 and $350,000, depending on condition and amenities like lakeside views. "Because the houses tend to be older, it keeps them at a more affordable price point," says Rose, who's served the area since 1999. Further south, residential zones take on a more rustic feel as lots gain acreage and patches of undeveloped woodlands. Contemporary homes with cabin-style accents are popular here, and tend to sell between $490,000 and $1.1 million, depending on size and acreage.

Recreation includes lake access, nature preserves and parks
Recreation tends to center around Whitmore Lake, which covers about 670 acres. Fishing is popular year-round, even when the lake freezes in winter. The North Township Community Park comprises both open and wooded green spaces and has a mile-long hiking path. Whitmore Lake Preserve has nearly 3 miles of trails through over 300 acres of untouched forests and wetlands, giving locals the chance for a nature hike or an afternoon of birdwatching. Whitmore Lake Golf Links is a public, 18-hole course with a bar and grill and options for league play.

Most shopping is in nearby Pinckney and Brighton
Retail, fast food and general shopping follow U.S. Route 23, including the Grand Crossing just north in Brighton. The nearest supermarket is Kroger in the neighboring community of Pinckney. Captain Joe's Grill offers a classic sports bar experience with outdoor seating, beer flights and live entertainment. "It's the best restaurant in the town," says Rose. "Great food, good prices -- it's usually always busy." Established in 1992, Whitmore Lake Tavern has a laid-back menu with pizza, burgers and steak dinners.

Whitmore Lake High blends academics with athletic success
Students in the area can begin at Whitmore Lake Elementary School, which has a B from Niche. From there, they can enroll at Whitmore Lake High School, which teaches seventh through 12th grade and has a B-plus. Athletics are a big part of the high school's culture, with a 2024 playoff appearance for its football team and state tournament play for its girls basketball team in 2025. "The schools are on the smaller side, but that means the students get more attention with smaller classes," says Linda Pomorski, an agent with Coldwell Banker. "A lot of great athletes come out of there." Michigan has open enrollment opportunities for students interested in attending a school outside their assigned district.
Whitmore Lake Middle and High School has 254 students in grades 7-12 according to Niche.com.

Highways and airport access support commuting and travel
The area's main highway is U.S. Route 23, which leads to Ann Arbor, about 10 miles away. Detroit is about 45 miles east via Interstate 96. The University of Michigan Medical Center provides both emergency and general care. The Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is equipped for air travel worldwide, including flights to Chicago, Toronto and Cancun.
