A lakefront Northport subdivision
Once the largest subdivision in Alabama with 765 houses, Northwood Lake established itself as a desirable community in the city of Northport with features that weren’t widely available at its founding in 1959. “They have some amenities that were unusual, I would say, for the time — primarily the lake, although pools and tennis courts weren’t super common either,” says Glenda Webb, who has been City Administrator of the City of Northport for over three years. While the subdivision no longer has the most homes in the state, Northwood Lake’s lush vegetation, aesthetically pleasing houses and quiet character attract homebuyers to one of the more well-established neighborhoods in the Tuscaloosa area.

Ranch-style and bilevel homes built into the landscape
The rolling, wooded hills of Northwood Lake slope down to the water. The terrain exposes the basements of some of the area’s ranch and bilevel homes, many of which have midcentury stylings such as wide gables and simple ornamentation. Lakefront homes start in the mid-$300,000s and go up to the mid-$500,000s, while houses throughout the remainder of the neighborhood sell between $200,000 and the mid-$300,000s. “It’s transitioning from a lot of older couples, who are probably downsizing, so now you’re seeing a resurgence of younger families moving into the neighborhood,” Webb says. “More strollers, more kids out playing — it’s a nice transition.”

Residents of Northwood Lake don’t have to go far for groceries, with a Publix in the Northwood Crossings shopping center just south of the neighborhood . McFarland Boulevard, which runs east-west past the shopping center , has plenty of retail options and strip malls, including stores like Ace Hardware and Walgreens, plus fast-food joints like Taco Bell, KFC and Chick-fil-A. On the other hand, for Main Street with a small-town feel, downtown Northport is a 2-mile drive and offers an artsier vibe with a focus on small businesses. The Kentuck Art Center supports local artists and connects the community, and its gallery shop is open seven days a week. “The arts are important here, as you can see by downtown Northport,” Webb says. “The Kentuck building is down there, and there are various studios that surround 5th Street and Main, so that creates the artsy feel of downtown .” For food, locals head to community staples like Billy’s Sports Grill and the City Cafe.
