Northwood Lake
Ranch-style and bilevel homes built into the landscape
The rolling, wooded hills of Northwood Lake slope down to the water. The terrain exposes the basements of some of the area’s ranch and bilevel homes, many of which have midcentury stylings such as wide gables and simple ornamentation. Lakefront homes start in the mid-$300,000s and go up to the mid-$500,000s, while houses throughout the remainder of the neighborhood sell between $200,000 and the mid-$300,000s. “It’s transitioning from a lot of older couples, who are probably downsizing, so now you’re seeing a resurgence of younger families moving into the neighborhood,” Webb says. “More strollers, more kids out playing — it’s a nice transition.”Tuscaloosa County education
Zoned to Tuscaloosa County Schools, Northwood Lake kids attend kindergarten through fourth grade at Faucett-Vestavia Elementary School, which receives a B-plus grade from Niche. Students move on to B-minus-rated Collins Riverside Intermediate School for fifth and sixth grade, followed by seventh and eighth at B-rated Echols Middle School, before finishing at B-rated Tuscaloosa County High School, which offers career-focused education programs such as accounting, computer science, television production and welding. The University of Alabama is just over 4 miles away in neighboring Tuscaloosa.Recreation on Northwood Lake
The centerpiece of Northwood Lake is its namesake body of water, a 69-acre lake open only to residents of the neighborhood for activities such as boating or fishing. The Jeannine Holden Walking Trail traces the south bank of the lake and leads to Holden Park’s playground. On the north end of the lake, neighbors can play tennis or take a dip in the community pool at Northwood Lake Park.Grocery shopping nearby at Northwood Crossings
Residents of Northwood Lake don’t have to go far for groceries, with a Publix in the Northwood Crossings shopping center just south of the neighborhood . McFarland Boulevard, which runs east-west past the shopping center , has plenty of retail options and strip malls, including stores like Ace Hardware and Walgreens, plus fast-food joints like Taco Bell, KFC and Chick-fil-A. On the other hand, for Main Street with a small-town feel, downtown Northport is a 2-mile drive and offers an artsier vibe with a focus on small businesses. The Kentuck Art Center supports local artists and connects the community, and its gallery shop is open seven days a week. “The arts are important here, as you can see by downtown Northport,” Webb says. “The Kentuck building is down there, and there are various studios that surround 5th Street and Main, so that creates the artsy feel of downtown .” For food, locals head to community staples like Billy’s Sports Grill and the City Cafe.Northport events, including Food and Wine Festival
The Northwood Lake HOA puts on events for its residents such as a neighborhood garage sale and holiday celebrations including an Easter egg hunt. Bigger events are held at the city level, including the annual West Alabama Food and Wine Festival, where visitors can enjoy small plates and wine while listening to live music. Historically, the Kentuck Festival of the Arts took place at Kentuck Park near downtown Northport, although that changed in 2024 when the festival jumped across the river to Tuscaloosa.Quick commutes to University of Alabama and Mercedes-Benz
Northwood Lake is in Northport, which resides north of the Black Warrior River from the city of Tuscaloosa. Lurleen Wallace Boulevard runs 3 miles south from the neighborhood to downtown Tuscaloosa and its shopping and restaurants, while the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa is just four miles from the neighborhood. The area’s main east-west highway, Interstate 20, leads 20 miles east to the Mercedes-Benz plant, which employs over 6,000 people. Meanwhile, Birmingham is another 40 miles east. Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport, the closest major airport, offers flights to over 20 cities, including hubs like Charlotte, Atlanta and Dallas-Fort Worth.
