Residents of Northvale, a small borough on the state line, have the Hudson River and Lake Tappan within reach.

You can find a smattering of homes in Northvale, from post-war small dwellings to heavily renovated houses to 55 and older communities. Home prices begin at around $500,000, eventually creeping up to nearly a million dollars. Houses typically have three or four bedrooms. The 55+ communities feature brand-new luxury condominiums and town house living. For example, at the Paris Square community, amenities include a putting green, a clubhouse, a movie theater and a heated pool.

Local kids can attend Northvale Public School for kindergarten through eighth grade. Middle schoolers can participate in school sports like soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball and track. High schoolers attend Northern Valley Regional High at Old Tappan, a National Blue Ribbon School. The highly ranked school has a student-teacher ratio of 10 to 1 and an overall A-plus rating from Niche. The high school is in the Top 30 for best athletes, state public schools and best teachers, according to Niche. Public school students are eligible to attend programs at Bergen County Technical Schools.

Speaking of little ones, you'll probably spend a lot of Saturdays at Veterans Memorial Park for community recreation baseball and softball games. There's also a basketball court and two small playgrounds. John Hogan Memorial Park has even more ball fields, a pavilion and a basketball court. The public Rockleigh Golf Course is nearby for golf enthusiasts. Play the full 27-hole course or play a quick game of 9 holes. For adrenaline junkies, Ninja Warrior fans and climbing enthusiasts, check out High Exposure. This extreme sports facility has rock climbing, ninja warrior obstacles and a family fun center. Spend time at the Northvale Public Library for indoor fun. There's toddler storytimes, adult book clubs and kid's craft times.

At Biddy O'Malley's, an Irish gastropub, enjoy a pint of Guinness with a traditional lamb shepherd's pie. A local staple for nearly 15 years, the husband of the couple who owns the pub is a native of Ireland. He wanted to open a space where the food was fresh and the prices low. Like most New Jersey towns, there's a diner in Northvale. The Northvale Classic Diner is where neighbors meet to catch up and high schoolers go after theater productions and football games. With breakfast served all day long, plus classic diner sandwiches, and a full bar, there's something for everyone. Grab a slice of pizza or a chicken parmigiana sub from Petrillo's Deli & Pizzeria. The borough may be small, but there's plenty of local restaurants to peruse and find your favorite. When you want to cook at home, Northvale has a ShopRite, Woo-Ri Mart, an Asian grocery, and a natural foods store.

Only minutes from the New York state line, you can be immersed in the natural scenery of Rockland County within minutes and travel to Manhattan in under an hour. However, there is plenty to do right at home in Northvale.
