A Norwalk suburb with Five Mile River views and a bustling commercial thoroughfare
Set against the saltwater Five Mile River, West Norwalk combines natural beauty with suburban convenience. Fast food chains, locally owned retro diners and big-box shopping strips are on the neighborhood's southern edge along U.S. Route 1, known locally as Connecticut Avenue. Black birch and red maple trees shade nature trails around the 18-hole Oak Hills Park Golf Course, spanning 144 acres off Fillow Street. The West Norwalk Association holds monthly meetings at the white clapboard West Norwalk Meeting House, formerly a Protestant church that opened in 1868. And residents of the neighborhood can easily reach three different historical town centers. “West Norwalk is the intersection between New Canaan, Darien and Norwalk,” says Sara Littlefield, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty who has sold several homes in the area. “You’re near all three of those downtowns, and New York is just over an hour away. It’s a dynamite location.”

Single-family homes from the late 1800s through the early 2000s
Most of West Norwalk was developed between the 1950s and ’70. Moss-covered stone walls surround three-bedroom Cape Cod cottages while American holly and beech trees hide Colonial Revivals on lots of about a quarter-acre. Asphalt driveways often lead to two-car garages tucked under vinyl façade split levels. But Littlefield says some outliers make the neighborhood special. “West Norwalk has a few newer homes, which is rare for the city.” It also has some late 1800s Queen Anne and Greek Revival styles, often featuring white picket fences and blue hydrangea bushes in the front yard. “Anything from the early 2000s, or renovated homes from the 19th century, are typically more expensive. I’ll receive multiple bids for either of those, usually over the asking price.” A single-family home in West Norwalk typically costs between $650,000 and $1.5 million, with those rarer properties occupying the higher end. This range is similar to a Norwalk home’s average $650,000 selling price. Several contemporary condominium complexes built during the 1970s and ‘80s are in the neighborhood’s southernmost region, with 2-bedroom units costing between $400,000 and $500,000. Severe rainstorms frequently cause the Five Mile River to overflow, putting homes closest to the waterway in a flood zone.

Oak Hills Park Golf Course has tennis courts, hiking trails and a restaurant
Norwalk’s only public golf course, Oak Hills Park Golf Course, opened in 1969. Flowering pink dogwood trees and water hazards line the 71-par course, where the women's league meets on Wednesday morning and the men’s association plays on Sunday. An adult-only tennis tournament is held every Friday on the park’s black clay courts during the summer. Hikers may spot white-tailed deer on the three nature trails around the course, which are all less than a mile long. On-site barbecue restaurant Odeen’s features course views from its wrap-around patio. West Norwalk is less than 3 miles from Waveny Park, a former 150-acre estate turned public green space with a 1912 Tudor mansion at its core. Gravel paths weave between daffodil fields and century-old bronze water fountains directly behind the houses, while modern facilities include a public swimming pool, tennis courts and a dog park. Though West Norwalk’s portion of the Five Mile River is too rocky and shallow for kayaking, the nearest paddleboat launch and Long Island Sound Beach is the Rowayton Community Beach, just 4 miles south of the neighborhood.
West Norwalk is home to several churches, including Temple Shalom of Norwalk, which has a daycare and preschool program. The Catholic St. Matthew Church takes up 2-and-a-half acres off Scribner Avenue, and The United Congregational Church of Norwalk’s contemporary structure sits on Richards Avenue.

The West Norwalk Association hosts neighborhood meetings and social events
Every homeowner in West Norwalk is automatically in the West Norwalk Association, which doesn’t charge dues. Formed in 1947, the organization hosts debris cleanups along the Five Mile River every spring. Norwalk city officials are often guest speakers at monthly meetings, discussing topics like traffic concerns and neighborhood landscaping. Locals can also attend association-sponsored cocktail nights at Oak Hills’ restaurant.
Ample grocery options and retro diners on Connecticut Avenue
Stores like Dick’s Sporting Goods, Best Buy and Kohl's line four-lane Connecticut Avenue. “This is where most people in Norwalk and Darien come for grocery shopping because there’s a Costco, Walmart, ShopRite and Stop & Shop,” says Littlefield. Aside from Dunkin’, Chick-fil-A and several other drive-through options, the street also has locally owned restaurants. For instance, red and mint green leather booths and barstools occupy the stainless steel interior of Post Road Diner, an Art Deco-style spot known for seafood, sandwiches and pizza since 1947. Baklava fills the glass case, and mirrored walls adorn the bar at Silver Star Diner, where Greek fare and cocktails are served until 2 a.m. every weekend. Mexican restaurants and performing arts theaters are in downtown Norwalk’s Italianate-style storefronts, about 4 miles from the neighborhood. Darien’s core is 3 miles south, and downtown New Canaan is just as close but to the north.
