Central Norwich
Historic single- and multifamily homes with some fixer-uppers
Homes on the river’s north side were mostly built from the 1850s to the 1920s, and Queen Anne, Italianate, Greek Revival and American Foursquare houses can neighbor one another. Some sit far from the road and are shaded by mature trees, while others sit close to the sidewalk. Many of these are multifamily homes. Bi-level, ranch-style and new traditional homes built from the 1990s to the 2000s are more common in the community’s southwest, where homes have paved driveways and grassy lawns. Some of the single- and multifamily homes here are fixer-uppers, which can range from around $90,000 to $370,000. Move-in-ready single-family houses range from around $160,000 to $470,000, while multi-family homes can cost between $210,000 and $560,000. Condos, some of which are in former industrial buildings and others are townhouse-style built in the 2000s, range from $110,000 to $270,000. “It’s a little bit more affordable,” Sydnor says. “Its value is still trending upward year over year, so you’re building equity.” Mid-rise apartment complexes and rental units in multi-family homes are also available.
Parks feature swimming, fishing and river access
There are several parks in Central Norwich, and the over 380-acre Mohegan Park is the largest. This scenic park has wooded walking paths, and the Veterans Memorial Rose Garden here has 2,500 rose bushes that bloom throughout the summer. Spaulding Pond is another popular summer hangout in the park, featuring a sandy beach and a swimming area. The pond is also stocked for trout and bass fishing. Howard T. Brown Memorial Park provides walking paths and benches with river views. Here, anglers can cast a line from the riverfront, and kayakers and canoers can explore the Norwich Harbor Water Trail. Each Fourth of July, families gather in the park to watch fireworks over the harbor. Boaters can store their crafts at The Marina at American Wharf.Near casinos that provide employment and entertainment
The area surrounding Central Norwich has several casinos that are employment and entertainment hubs for the community. “It's not just gambling,” Sydnor says. “They’re considered resorts, and they definitely employ a lot of people.” Mohegan Sun is about 3 miles away; the arena there is the home of the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun basketball team, and the venue also hosts popular musicians and events like the Connecticut Pickle Festival. Foxwoods is another resort casino about 8 miles away.A walkable downtown with a variety of restaurants

These Guys Brewing at American Wharf serves locally brewed beers and classic bar food with views of the marina. More shopping and dining options are in the southwest, including Olde Tymes Restaurant, which has served homestyle meals with a rustic vibe for over 40 years. For groceries, the Norwich Farmers Market has locally grown produce each week in the summer, and ShopRite and Stop & Shop are nearby. Tanger at Foxwoods, about 8 miles away, has upscale outlet stores like Coach and Nike.Norwich Free Academy offers free attendance for local students

High schoolers can attend the B-plus-rated Norwich Free Academy, an independent private school that is Norwich’s primary high school. Attendance is free for Norwich students. The school was founded in 1854 and has several buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. It became a National Blue Ribbon School in 2001 and is also known for having the oldest football rivalry in the country against New London High.Getting around by car, bus or on foot
State Route 2 is the main road through the community and connects to Interstate 395. The Southeast Area Transit District operates bus routes through Central Norwich that connect to New London and Jewett City. Sidewalks make most of the community pedestrian friendly. Hartford Healthcare’s Backus Hospital is in the northwest, and Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport is a 42-mile trip. Some flooding risk from the rivers
