The birthplace of the Novi Special
Michigan's city of Novi is an unassuming northwestern Detroit suburb of nearly 67,000 residents. Incorporated in 1969, the city's name is said to have been coined from the number six — or no. VI — toll gate along Grand River Road; and was later popularized by the creation of the 'Novi Special,' a 450-horsepower racing engine developed here in the early 1940s. Today, residents are reminded of their city's heritage each time they pass by the community's historic water tower — painted bright red and donning a massive yellow racecar, the white lettering reads "the birthplace of the Novi Special." “Novi features amazing restaurants, coffee shops and arts and crafts," says Monique Carter, real estate broker with EXP Realty. “There's always something to do.” The city is also home to a miniature R/C raceway track, stately parks, unique eateries and one of Michigan’s largest shopping malls, Twelve Oaks. Interstate 96 runs through the heart of Novi, and provides residents with direct access to downtown Detroit, about 29 miles away.

A steadily growing housing market
Housing styles vary greatly across the city’s many different neighborhoods. Three- and four-bedroom homes are popular in neighborhoods like Mystic Forest, while condos can be found in neighborhoods like Island Lake. Popular home styles include Tudors and Cape Cods, and the city’s neighborhoods are plotted with wide streets that allow for easy street parking, which accompanies the area's many driveways. The city's median home price is $468,000, but prices can range from as low as $50,000 to upwards of $5 million depending on size, condition and location. For example, a manufactured home can sell for $50,000, while condo units tend to go for between $188,000 and $335,000, and single-family homes sell from the mid $400,000s to upwards of $800,000.

Top employers, health care and transportation
Novi’s top employers include the Ascension Providence Health Center, which provides the city with more than 2,200 jobs, and the Novi Community School District, which employs roughly 900 staff members. Ascension is a Level II trauma center, a comprehensive stroke center and is also nationally recognized for its work in treating various forms of cancer. The health system sits less than a quarter-of-a-mile south of Interstate 96, which runs through the north end of the city, and Michigan’s Smart bus system provides residents with public transit routes throughout the city. The interstate connects to other highways around the Detroit metro region and puts downtown Detroit less than 30 miles away. When traveling longer distances, the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is 27 miles away.
Walled Lake and Novi parks
Situated on the outskirts of the Detroit metro area, Novi has an abundance of parks and green spaces. The city shares a border with Walled Lake, which gives residents a place to fish, swim or boat. The lake’s shores also host a collection of parks like Pavilion Shore Park, which provides paved trails, horseshoe pits and picnic areas. The rest of the city’s parks hold other amenities like a 150-seat amphitheater and a sculpture garden.

Twelve Oaks Mall, shopping, dining and events
The city’s largest shopping and dining district is found near the intersection of Novi Road and Interstate 96. Just north of the interstate, the Twelve Oaks Mall is one of the state’s largest shopping centers. The mall, Carter says, is popular in the city and is home to more than 180 stores and a myriad of restaurants. The city also offers a full calendar of seasonal events for residents to enjoy. Carnival-themed Spring Palooza brings residents and city officials together for a day of food and fun. While Novi’s convention center, the Suburban Collection Showplace, hosts large scale events like the Michigan State Fair, Motor City Comic Con and the Michigan Women’s Expo. Roughly 25 miles away, the Pine Knob Music Theatre attracts bands from all over the world. Comerica Park, 28 miles away, is home to the Detroit Tigers Major League Baseball team.

Island Lake is a neighborhood that embodies luxurious lakefront living with unlimited access to water and outdoor recreation. This private community sits south of Interstate 96 and 35 miles from downtown Detroit. “What drew me here to begin with is the location,” says Island Lake resident and Relator at REMAX Classic Crystal Halley. “We were living in Novi, and the schools there are great. You got the water, and you can’t beat that.”
Island Lake resembles a movie scene with grand houses, manicured lawns, and perfectly paved sidewalks. Walking around Island Lake, you’ll see the places are similar in colors, featuring either brick-front properties or light brown and yellow hues. Many homes were built in the early to mid-2000s. These are primarily two-story detached homes or condos with colonial or Cape Cod-inspired architecture. Interiors come with more than 2,500 sq ft of space and three bedrooms. Some homes carry private views or access to the lake through the patios and sitting areas. If you’re looking for a condo, prices range from $500,000 to $700,000. Then, single-family detached homes will range from $900,000 to $1,100,000.
You’ll find Island Lake is an active community as residents have private access to many forms of outdoor recreation. “A big attraction point is the lake. It spans about a mile,” Halley says. “There’s nothing like it in the area. There are seven associations that encompass the development. There’s fishing. You can paddle boats and motorboats.” You can also spend a relaxing day in the beach area or by the swimming pool. If you want to stay out of the water, there are tennis, volleyball and pickleball courts. Ride your bike or walk the dog along the several well-maintained sidewalks and trails. Spend the afternoon having a lakeside picnic while the kids or furry pups enjoy the green space and playground within North Park.
Students in Island Lake can get their education from Novi Community School District, which is Number 1 in Niche’s 2024 Best School Districts in Michigan. Grades K through fourth-grade students can attend Woods Elementary School, which holds an A plus Niche grade. Students start to expand their subjects from elementary years, offering art, band, music, world language, and robotics. Grades seven and eight are at Novi Middle School, which also holds an A plus Niche grade. Students can enroll in honors-level math courses or participate in the 14 after-school clubs. Novi High School has an A plus Niche grade. This school offers over 20 AP courses and 15 IB courses. Their athletics teams are highly praised, as their Baseball team won the 2023 Division 1 Championship.
If you head northeast along Wixom Road, you’ll discover several dining options varying from local shops to national giants. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are coming fresh off the grill of The Grand Diner. You find there classic American and some Greek-inspired dishes. If you stay along Wixom Road, you’ll find a Sam’s Club, Target and Aldi. If you're heading south, a Kroger can be located along 10 Mile Rd.
“There’s all kinds of events all year round,” Halley says. “Our social committee is very active. We have the dinners, book clubs.” Other notable events include the garage sale, classic auto show, and for the kiddos trunk or treat. “It’s a multi-cultural and very friendly area,” Halley says. “For the trunk or treat event, I had a lot of people say to me thank you for doing this.” If you need to commute, you’re only a mile from Interstate 96, which can connect you to other interstates and cities. “Interstate 96, it takes you to the state capital, and then if you head east, it takes you to Detroit,” Halley says. “Then, 275 runs north and south, which can take you into Ann Arbor and link you to downtown Detroit.” Every day is a vacation when you’re living in Island Lake.
