Central Oak Harbor neighborhood
Olympic Gardens is a centrally located Oak Harbor neighborhood that offers easy access to just about anywhere in and around town, from the water to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island. This part of Oak Harbor offers a range of housing options, convenient shopping and dining and access to the heart of town. “It’s more affordable than a lot of the more remote communities on Whidbey Island, and you’re right next to downtown, so it’s super convenient,” says Realtor Cristie Arnold of Re/Max Gateway, who has lived and worked in the area for over seven years. “And even though you’re technically ‘in town,’ it’s not like you’re more than a few minutes drive from the sound and the forests.”
Midcentury homes
Olympic Gardens was one of the first neighborhoods developed in Oak Harbor following the construction of Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in the 1940s. Consequently, the housing market is mostly made up of midcentury ranch-style homes and cottages. These homes typically offer between 1,000 and 2,000 square feet of space and feature private driveways and a bit more yard space than one might expect in a central neighborhood. Homes usually sell for between $400,000 and $600,000.
Route 20 shopping
While Olympic Gardens itself is primarily residential, it’s located just east of Oak Harbor’s retail corridor, which runs along state Route 20. The area is home to several grocery stores, including Safeway and Saar’s Super Saver Foods, as well as the only big box stores on Whidbey Island.
Just south of the neighborhood, the very walkable downtown area features a variety of popular cafes and restaurants, many of which offer views of the harbor. Orlando’s Southern BBQ is a local favorite, known for its brisket, catfish and laid-back atmosphere. For those looking for a more refined dining experience, Fraser's Gourmet Hideaway offers a menu featuring Pacific Northwest cuisine with an emphasis on local ingredients. In addition, west Oak Harbor has a variety of international cuisine options, including Thai, Mexican and Italian restaurants.
Wildcat TV at Oak Harbor High
Most students in the area attend Oak Harbor Public Schools. Oak Harbor Elementary, which is located within the neighborhood, and North Whidbey Middle School both have a B grade on Niche. Oak Harbor High School has a B-plus grade and is known across the island for Wildcat TV, a student-run cable channel that features everything from news to theater productions. North Whidbey Christian High School, whose campus is on the north side of the neighborhood, is also a popular option for older Olympic Gardens students.
Volunteer Park’s pool and skate park
Olympic Gardens is home to two of the largest city parks in Oak Harbor: Volunteer Park and Holland Gardens Park. Volunteer park hosts the local Little League games and is home to the town’s public pool, as well as its sizeable skate park. A few blocks south of the neighborhood, the waterfront-adjacent Windjammer Park features walking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds and a beach. For those interested in hiking, boating and wildlife viewing, Fort Ebey State Park, Dugualla State Park and Deception Pass State Park are all within a 10-mile drive of the neighborhood.
Oak Harbor Music Festival
Windjammer Park hosts community events and festivals throughout the year, including the Oak Harbor Music Festival and Oak Harbor Independence Day Carnival. The Music Festival, held every year in late summer, features dozens of local and national performers and draws thousands of visitors from all over the Greater Seattle area.
Getting around North Whidbey Island
State Route 20, Whidbey Island’s main highway, passes through Olympic Gardens. The highway provides easy access to the rest of the island and the Deception Pass Bridge, which connects Whidbey Island to Fidalgo Island and the mainland. It’s less than 3 miles to the entrance to Whidbey Island Station, the largest employer in town. Coupeville, which is home to the nearest public hospital and emergency room, along with some of North Whidbey’s most popular restaurants, is an 11-mile drive from Olympic Gardens. Public transportation is available through Island Transit, which offers free bus services across Whidbey Island. The Harbor Station Transfer Center, which serves as the heart of the local public transit system, is just 3 blocks south of Olympic Gardens. The area is becoming increasingly bike-friendly, with dedicated bike lanes and trails available throughout the island.
