Fishing town near the beach

The marshes, wildlife and fishing operations of Oak Hill give it the feel of a community removed from the Florida coast. But this low-key town in southern Volusia County sits along the Indian River, 20 minutes away from New Smyrna Beach. Historically a center of citrus farming and commercial fishing, today Oak Hill is a bedroom community with friendly neighbors who arrive and never want to leave.

Being immersed in the outdoors

Oak Hill got its name from its heavy population of oak trees draped with Spanish moss, according to the Southeast Volusia Chamber of Commerce. Nature is an important part of life in the so-called “fishing capital of the world.” Redfish and snook abound here, but activities like crabbing and dip net shrimping are also popular. Locals launch kayaks into Mosquito Lagoon, where fishermen also take people out on charter boats. Kids can enjoy the playground at Mary DeWees Park, which also has baseball fields, and Scottsmoor Landing is a popular place to cast a line from the dock. Oak Hill may be on the coast, but it’s on the bay side, west of barrier islands. On the nearby island is Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park, a 6-acre sandy area with a beautiful shoreline, athletic courts and benches to take in breathtaking views of the beach.

Many houses were built in the last 20 years, including stucco houses and two-level homes with screened-in pools. The town has a wide range of prices, from $90,000 to $790,000. “All the neighbors are super friendly and will start conversations when they see you,” Kim Laney, resident and Realtor with Florida Realty Investments says. “I see most people when I’m walking my dog.”
