Eastmont, a changing neighborhood in East Oakland

Eastmont is a neighborhood in East Oakland that has become known for redevelopment. A former Chevrolet assembly plant was first converted into an indoor mall, which has since become the modern Eastmont Town Center, a complex full of social service organizations, local restaurants and retailers. Locals met up at markets and festivals at Liberation Park, a former vacant lot that's being built into a large mixed-use community hub. Some parts of Eastmont's appeal, however, have been the same for generations: easy access to East Bay interstates and bus lines, a walkable layout and homes that sell for lower prices than in much of the rest of Oakland.

Bungalows for lower prices than in much of Oakland

Smaller single-family homes were built close together on Eastmont's residential blocks in the early 1900s, including many Craftsman bungalows and Spanish-inspired cottages. Prices range from the lower $300,000s to the lower $600,000s. Eastmont has a median single-family home price in the mid-$400,000s. That's lower than nearby Arroyo Viejo, Havenscourt, Frick, Eastmont Hills, Millsmont and Oak Knoll. It's roughly half the median price in Oakland as a whole. “Oakland has gotten extremely expensive. Buyers are drawn to the affordability so they can stay in the city,” says So Hyun Augustine, a Realtor with Winkler Real Estate Group.

Knowland Park and Leona Canyon are minutes away

While Eastmont doesn't have a park, it's a short walk from a couple of green spaces and community centers. Larger recreation areas are a couple of miles away in the surrounding hills. You might like:

  • Arroyo Viejo Recreation Center, where you’ll find a playground, sports courts and an indoor community center
  • Knowland Park, an expansive hiking destination beside the Oakland Zoo
  • Leona Canyon Regional Open Space Preserve, a nearly 300-acre area where you can hike and bike through a wooded canyon

Between East Bay interstates and transit hubs

Eastmont is between Interstate 580 and Interstate 880, two of the East Bay's major freeways. It's a roughly 10-mile drive to City Center-Oakland, which can take 15 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic. If you prefer public transportation, AC Transit buses make stops throughout the neighborhood and at the Eastmont Transit Center. Bay Area Rapid Transit, or BART, trains stop at the Coliseum's station about 2 miles away, connecting you to the greater Bay Area.

A history and future of community at Liberation Park

The Black Cultural Zone Community Development Corporation maintained Liberation Park, a community event space at the corner of 73rd Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. In the past, this once-vacant lot has served as a venue for everything from Juneteenth festivals to free summer concerts and resource fairs. Liberation Park is now the name of a mixed-use development set to add modern apartment units and event areas to East Oakland. The project's housing complex, community spaces and market hall have been planned by local community leaders and developers for years, with a groundbreaking set for 2026.
