Highland
Ferry rides and train stops
Highland has plenty of access to public transportation, be it the nearby Bay Area Rapid Transit bus station or the San Francisco Bay Ferry. “It’s always good to head to Jack London Square and head to San Francisco on a nice sunny day,” says Garrett.” The area’s main thoroughfare is International Blvd, which is home to many of the area’s businesses, and leads drivers throughout Oakland and beyond. For international travel, the Oakland International Airport is about four miles away. The San Leandro Hospital is also about four miles from Highland.Locally owned businesses on International Bouleavrd
Reina’s Restaurant and Dixon’s are a couple of local favorites along International Blvd. Garrett says the restaurants have moved around Oakland, but are known in the community as popular spots. Other than that pairing, the area around Highland has plenty of locally owned businesses, and competition between street vendors and brick-and-mortar shops can be fierce. "I think the street vendors put the flower companies out of business because they sell them at such a lower price," says Garrett. “I see a lot of mom-and-pop grocery stores all over the area," says Garrett. "If you go down East 14th, you see the vendors selling toys, food and flowers. ” For groceries, people in the area head to Food King, and Bridgeside Shopping Center for more restaurants and retail shops.Mini-parks and rec centers
Tassafaronga Recreation Center and Park is within walking distance of most homes in the neighborhood and has athletic fields and a social hall. Elmhurst Park is also utilized for its tennis and basketball courts and its playground. Mini parks at 85 and 88th Avenue give everyone in the neighborhood access to a green space. For more involved outdoor time, Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park has extensive hiking and biking trails and is about eight miles away.Bungalows off International Boulevard
Bungalows and large craftsman homes are often owned by long-term residents and their kids and family members, which creates a community atmosphere in the neighborhood. "I would say people who have lived there have lived there for quite a while,” says Eli Kuo, a Realtor with Keller Williams who’s been selling Bay Area real estate since 2004. Single-family properties tend to go for between $400,000 and $700,000 and multiple-family properties for between $600,000 and $1 million. “Your prices are still fairly low compared to some other parts of Oakland,” says Garrett.Oakland Unified Public Schools
The area is served by the Oakland Unified School District, which has a B-minus rating on Niche. Highland Community and Elmhurst United Middle Schools both have C-minus ratings on Niche. Castlemont High School has a C rating and a medieval-style exterior, and the school’s mascot is a knight.Oakland Arena and Coliseum
Highland is a few minutes’ drive from Oakland Coliseum, home of the Oakland A’s and Oakland Arena, which used to be the home of the San Francisco Warriors. “You’ve still got a low of Warriors fans in Oakland,” says Garrett. “Vendors sell shirts and caps.” Although the basketball team is gone, baseball is still popular in the city, and the Oakland Arena now draws national music acts to perform.
