A revitalized industrial neighborhood by the water
Home to much of Oakland's transportation infrastructure, Jack London Square is a highly visible example of the city's transformation from a blue-collar industrial and shipping hub to a town driven by tech companies and knowledge workers. Historically, the area functioned as a major shipping port and warehouse district, but today it offers a mix of repurposed industrial structures, high-rise residential towers and some of the best shopping and dining in town. The neighborhood is beloved for its location and connectivity — residents are right next to the ferry terminal, the Amtrak Station and multiple highways and BART lines. All those commuting options do come with a price, though: rail and highway noise can be an issue in parts of the neighborhood.

What draws homebuyers and how much condos cost
"Jack London Square has gotten really popular in the last couple of decades," says associate broker Mark DuBois of KW East Bay, who has worked in the area for over 20 years. "You're right next to the water, and some of the best restaurants in town. Commuting is easy, and there are trails all along the waterfront. It has everything."
The housing market is dominated by modern condos and converted industrial lofts. Unlike the Victorian and Craftsman single-family homes found in older Oakland neighborhoods, residences here often feature exposed brick, high concrete ceilings and large factory-style windows. Amenities like fitness centers and pools are common, as are HOA or condo fees, typically ranging from $500 to $1,300 per month depending on unit size. Condos range from the mid $200,000s to the low $900,000s. Train noise can be an issue for properties near the tracks, particularly those close to the railyard just west of the neighborhood, but many buildings mitigate this with soundproofing.
Jack London Square is home to many newer condo projects and has become quite popular.

There are good commuting options in the neighborhood
Diverse transportation options are a hallmark of the area. Freight and passenger rail lines run directly through the middle of the street along Embarcadero West. The Amtrak Jack London Square Station provides regional service via the Capitol Corridor and Coast Starlight lines.
San Francisco commuters have multiple ways to get across the Bay. The San Francisco Bay Ferry terminal is located in the neighborhood, offering daily service to San Francisco and Alameda. Nearby, the free Oakland-Alameda Water Shuttle runs Tuesday through Sunday and provides a quick link across the estuary to Alameda Landing. Additionally, most homes in the neighborhood are within a half-mile walk of either the Lake Merritt or West Oakland BART stops. On top of all that, interstates 980 and 880 run north of the neighborhood, so car commuting is easy. San Francisco is roughly 10 miles away via the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, and the neighborhood is just 8 miles from Oakland International Airport.
