Community, affordability and accessibility in East Oakland
Many Bay Area hot spots are within reach of North Stonehurst on Oakland’s eastern border. It hugs up to International Boulevard, a corridor dissecting East Oakland, which is known for its multicultural cuisine. North Stonehurst is close to the Oakland Zoo on one side, the Oakland airport on the other, and San Leandro to its southeast. “North Stonehurst appeals primarily because of affordability—it's one of the more affordable neighborhoods in Oakland. And it has accessibility, with public transportation and a location between two major highways. It’s close to the BART station,” says Felicia Duncan, Realtor with Real Estate Experts, who has sold 300 homes in the Bay Area. “Oakland has a really strong sense of community in spite of its challenges. There's still a lot of pride. And a lot of churches are trying to build community in." This sense of community is seen with Greater Grace Temple Church, which provides free mobile market food distributions in the southeast corner of the neighborhood, and Allen Temple Baptist Church, which provides a variety of mission-based programs.

Yards with small grass areas, colorful foliage or drought-resistant landscaping are often enclosed in wrought-iron or chain-link fences. Homes average 1,100 square feet and have two to four bedrooms. The median home price is around $550,000. These homes range from $400,000 to $675,000. An occasional home with modern luxury features like granite countertops and solid wood cabinets may be priced around $800,000. “The neighbors are improving their homes and really making them look better,” says James Garrett, Realtor with Better Homes Realty and a Bay Area leader since 1976. “North Stonehurst is on the rise.”
