A true "hidden gem" in north Oakland
In a city as large and dense as Oakland, it’s nice to find a neighborhood that feels like a little suburban pocket. In Paradise Park, many homes have backyards, it’s common to see residents out walking their dogs and there’s a corner café where employees know the regulars. At the same time, its central location, proximity to public transportation and walkability give residents the benefits of urban living. A true “hidden gem,” Paradise Park isn’t as well-known as some of Oakland’s other neighborhoods, and according to Emma Morris, a second-generation Berkeley Realtor who has been working in the area since 2001, many newcomers discover it by accident. “They start with the location and the housing prices, but then they discover the charm of the neighborhood,” Morris says.

A mix of old Craftsman and new contemporary homes
Located in the northernmost part of Oakland, Paradise Park is close to San Francisco, Berkeley and Pixar's headquarters in Emeryville. Like most city neighborhoods, it has a slightly higher crime rate than the national average (it scores a five on the CAP Index, one point higher than the national average). There is a broad range of home styles, some dating back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, including classic bungalows, Craftsman homes and Victorian-era homes with ornamental trim and bay windows. Some newly built homes are also popping up in the neighborhood, sporting boxy exteriors in neutral colors. Front yards are small but often packed with verdant plant life. Mature trees dot the quiet, narrow streets, and sidewalks are abundant throughout the neighborhood, making it very walkable. Prices range from $800,000 to $1.5 million for an average of three bedrooms and two and a half baths, with varying square footage. Apartment complexes can also be found throughout the neighborhood, home to many of the area’s renters, who make up 66% of residents.

Golden Gate Recreation Center is a hub of activity
For fresh air and exercise, locals head to Golden Gate Recreation Center and Robert Mason Fields, a recently renovated green space off 62nd Street. The baseball fields buzz with excitement on game nights, as does the playground on weekends. There are basketball courts outside for playing in the sunshine and inside the rec center when the weather is less than stellar. The rec center also hosts after-school and day camps for kids, offers rental space for residents to host celebrations, and, on the last Friday of each month, has a jazz, poetry and comedy open mic night with wine and cheese.
