A secluded village on miles of Pacific Ocean beachfront
In Moclips, the wind tousles grassy sand dunes as waves crash onto a vast beach, walkable from many locals’ backyards. Flocks of seagulls soar overhead, and sandpipers scamper at the edges of the shore. This Grays Harbor County community is known for its location on the coast of Washington state. “It's the ocean; it's the big draw to Moclips,” says Realtor/broker Marjie Southall who works with John L. Scott Real Estate and has about two decades of experience in the area. Moclips appeals to those wanting to live in a remote waterside village, with around 200 hundred other people, or those seeking silence and solitude at their vacation home. The area is also known for tourists who often visit in the summertime. Residents rely on the small town of Seabrook for a grocery store and community events — only a 3-mile drive away . Moclips is about 30 miles north of Aberdeen and 30 miles south of the Olympic National Forest.
Mocrocks Beach and more recreation spots
Mocrocks Beach, in walking distance of most residents’ homes, offers miles of uninterrupted beachfront and pine-covered bluffs. There’s driving on the beach, clam digging and walking along Pacific Ocean, but most avoid swimming because of the cold water. Beachcombing is easy, with plenty of seashells and sand dollars to find. At Seabrook Playground, parents can bring kids to a jungle gym with a zip line. The park also has basketball courts and a dog park where furry friends can run off-leash. In Olympic National Forest, about 30 miles away, hiking trails ascend past towering evergreens. Olympic National Park is north of the forest for scenic vistas of glaciers, rainforests and the Olympic Mountains.
Ocean views from Moclips homes
The community’s main road, State Route 109, has homes on smaller, secluded lots separated by pine trees that are within walking distance of the beach. There are also waterfront homes on roads closer to the shore. Home styles here include bungalows, A-frames and ranch-style homes. Ranch-style homes range from $700,000 to $800,000, while contemporary beach houses with ocean views start from $1.4 to $1.6 million. As a remote and undeveloped village, Moclips offers plenty of land for sale, including multi-acre lots where buyers can build custom homes. These lots range from $200,000 to $900,000.
Upscale dining at Ocean Crest Restaurant and minimal retail
Moclips’ tiny village feel is emphasized by a lack of retail. “The only thing there is one restaurant and one small store. It’s a beautiful restaurant with great views,” Southall says. Located in the Ocean Crest Resort, Ocean Crest Restaurant welcomes the public in addition to hotel guests. Blown glass artwork and panoramic ocean views give it an upscale feel for a fine dining experience with locally sourced ingredients. Moclips Country Store is a convenience shop that also sells made to order foods like pizza and fish and chips . To stock up on produce and groceries, Fresh Foods Market is 3 miles away in Seabrook.
Museum of the North Beach and an amphitheater
Although the outdoors are the primary recreation outlet in Moclips, it’s also home to the Museum of the North Beach, where visitors can learn about local history and check out exhibits with artifacts from the Northern Pacific Railway and the logging industry. At the Sunset Amphitheater, there’s the Seabrook Sunset Concert series — live music with lawn seating and ocean views every Friday night in the summertime.
North Beach public schools and a private option
The community is served by the North Beach School District, which earns a C-minus grade according to Niche. Pacific Beach Elementary School has a C-minus rating, while North Beach Junior High School is rated a C. North Beach Senior High School has a C-plus rating and advanced courses for college credit. For a private school option, North Coast Montessori School serves first through fifth grade.
A 30-mile commute to Aberdeen
Moclips is a car-dependent community, and its main road is State Route 109 . It's located about 80 miles from Olympia via State Route 8. It’s also about 30 miles from Aberdeen, which is accessible via Ocean Beach Road . Those who prefer public transit can catch a Grays Harbor Transit bus at the stop across from Moclips Country Store. For the closest hospital, Harbor Regional Health Emergency Department is 30 miles away in Aberdeen. The Seattle–Tacoma International Airport is about 130 miles away.
