Surrounded by quiet farmland, close to Hood River

Encompassed by farmland and orchards, and anchored by two fruit processing centers, Odell has a rural feel to it. The community is less than 8 miles away from the urban nucleus of the Upper Valley—the city of Hood River. “We prefer living where we’re not crammed house to house,” says Terri Martz, an Oregon-Washington broker for Don Nunamaker Realtors, who lives in the Upper Valley of the Hood River. “But when I want to go to stores, restaurants and breweries, I can go to town.”

Homes separated by orchards and farmland

Ranch-style homes—some of which are manufactured—built from the 1960s onward are separated by farmland and fruit orchards. “If you want to live out in the orchards and have more property, you have to go into the Upper Valley,” Martz says. “You’re not going to find properties in Hood River with acreage.” Older, single-level homes can cost between $400,000 and $500,000, while new traditional builds with tuck-under garages constructed around 2020 usually fetch between $600,000 and $800,000. Newer builds often feature covered patios and nostalgic Craftsman details, many part of the Barrett Vista homeowners association. The Odell Mobile Home Park—near the Mount Hood Railroad tracks—rents lots for around $500 per month. Odell Creek flows through the neighborhood, and homes built along the water may be at an increased risk of potential flooding.

Hood River County Fairgrounds

The Hood River County Fairgrounds are near the center of the neighborhood; Ferris wheels, carnival games and the smell of popcorn fill the space every late July. The county fair celebrated its 103rd anniversary in 2024 with pony rides, dog shows, a butterfly exhibit, a livestock auction and competitions in food preservation, baked goods and floral arrangements. The fairgrounds also host the Blossom Festival Craft Fair on the third weekend of every April, just as the Hood River Valley blooms for springtime. For almost 30 years, vendors from across the Northwest have gathered to show off handcrafted jewelry, sewn goods, patio pieces, baked goods and other products.

Hood River Little League at Pep Mann Field

The Odell Neighborhood Park sits within a cluster of homes, with two modern playsets and paved walking trails. The Hood River Valley Little League practices and competes at the Pep Mann Field, another popular gathering spot for neighborhood children behind Mid Valley Elementary School. Just north of the neighborhood’s boundaries, a network of trails makes up Tucker Park, where campsites allow nature enthusiasts to fall asleep to the sounds of the Hood River rushing over rocks and stones in its path.

Authentic Michoacán carnitas tacos and Mexican groceries

Most of Odell’s businesses are concentrated on the southern stretch of Odell Highway, like Michoacán Sports Bar and Grill, which started with a family carnitas recipe from the Mexican state of Michoacán. The restaurant serves authentic tacos, and next door, La Mexicana Carniceria carries imported groceries and other goods from Mexico. Across the street, Odell Café offers espresso, bagel sandwiches and scones from its breakfast trailer. Mid Valley Market carries groceries, though many residents travel to Hood River for shopping and other errands.

College credit at Hood River Valley High

Local children can begin their K-12 education at Mid Valley Elementary School before enrolling in Wy’East Middle School, both of which receive B grades from Niche. They may then finish their secondary studies at Hood River Valley High School, which earns an A-minus and offers several opportunities to earn college credit. Students can take courses taught in collaboration with Columbia Gorge Community College or Advanced Placement classes, including Human Geography, Calculus AB and BC, Environmental Science, Computer Science A and Computer Science Principles. The school also provides counseling programs like Upward Bound—which helps students earn scholarships and financial aid—as well as ASPIRE, which connects students to professionals in the fields in which they are interested.

A community between two major regional roads

Odell is nestled between two major Upper Valley thoroughfares: Oregon state Routes 35 and 281, also known as Dee Highway. The former passes the community on its way from the city of Hood River to the ski resorts at the base of Mount Hood. Dee Highway connects Hood River to Parkwood, skirting past Odell on its way south. Odell Highway cuts through the neighborhood, passing by essential destinations like Mid Valley Market, Odell Café and Michoacán Sports Bar and Grill before it merges into Dee Highway. The Columbia Area Transit’s Upper Valley bus stops at Mid Valley Market on its way to Hood River and Parkdale.
