Salt of the earth Odessa neighborhood

Burnett Heights is a residential area in southside Odessa, about 2 miles from Downtown. “That’s just a salt of the earth, hard-working neighborhood,” says Ricky Warnick, Realtor and property manager with The Sales Team Realtors, who grew up in the community. Many residents work in the oil and gas industry, which makes up one-fourth of the city’s major employers. Odessa sits in the heart of the Permian Basin, which is rich in potassium, petroleum and natural gas. Its role in the oil and gas industry led 1PointFive, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum, to build its $1 billion carbon capture facility in Odessa. The neighborhood is on the edge of Interstate 20, which makes it easy for folks to get to work.

Interstate 20 creates easy travel

Like the rest of Odessa, Burnett Heights is car dependent. Grant Avenue, which overlaps U.S. Route 385, connects the neighborhood to Downtown. Interstate 20 borders the southern part of the community, allowing residents to access the nearby city of Midland, about 20 miles away, or the oil fields for work. “It’s easy to get in and out of that neighborhood,” Warnick says. EZ-Rider has a bus route along Monahans Street that goes Downtown. Midland International Air & Space Port is about a 12-mile drive. Medical Center Hospital and Odessa Regional Medical Center are about 2 miles away.

Locally owned eateries along Grant Avenue

There are several eateries in the area. One of Warnick’s childhood favorites is Watts Burger, which has been serving burgers and steak fingers since the 1950s. Many of the restaurants in the area are family-owned Mexican places. “My truck won’t hardly go by one of those restaurants without going out of control into the parking lot,” Warnick says, laughing. One such restaurant is La Margarita, which hosts an annual breakfast for first responders. There are more options Downtown, including the Permian Basin Hamburger Co. The closest grocery store is Lowe’s La Tienda. Walmart, Target and Lowe’s are about 6 miles away, near the Music City Mall. The mall has major retailers, such as JCPenney, and Rock N’ Rink, an indoor roller rink.

Homeowners and renters in Burnett Heights

Sidewalks line the streets of Burnett Heights, leading from homes to the neighborhood park in the north. Grassy lawns are dotted with oak and pine trees and are often fenced in. Many residents have driveways, although the wide roads provide ample parking space. “Southside Odessa is relatively old,” Warnick says. Most homes are ranch styles built between the 1940s and 1960s. Prices for a three-bedroom can range from $75,000 to $150,000. There are several leased properties in the area, with rent falling between $1,000 and $1,500 a month.

O’Connor Park is small neighborhood park

Folks can walk to O’Conner Park, a small neighborhood park in the northern part of Burnett Heights. Kids can climb on the playground or run around the open field. For a little more space, families can head to nearby McKinney Park. This park has a sprayground in the summertime. Comanche Trail is a tree-lined, 2-mile walking path that runs through McKinney Park. The Ector County Library is about 2 miles away and hosts programs for all ages, including Read to Felix, where younger readers can practice their skills with a therapy dog.

McKinney Park becomes winter wonderland

Every December, McKinney Park becomes Odessa’s winter wonderland, Starbright Village. The first weekend kicks off with a tree-lighting ceremony, with carolers, food trucks and holiday-themed activities. Reindeer, candy canes and other holiday symbols are made from over 300,000 light bulbs. Locals can stroll or drive through the glittering displays, keeping warm with a cup of hot cocoa. On Friday and Saturday nights, kids can visit Santa Land and tell Saint Nick their wish list.

Permian Panthers have “MOJO”

The Ector County Independent School District serves the Burnett Heights neighborhood. Blackshear Elementary School receives a C-minus, while Bonham Junior High School has a C. Permian High School earns a C-plus. The school’s football team, the Permian Panthers, have a unique rallying cry: “MOJO.” While the origins and meaning of MOJO are still debated, one leading theory is that it means “never say die.” The team is always going to give more than 100% and will always win. Odessa College, about 3 miles away, is a community college that offers nearly 120 associate degrees and certificate programs. The University of Texas Permian Basin is about 5 miles away and has over 30 undergraduate and 20 graduate degree programs.
