Del Rio witnesses Odessa’s growth
Del Rio sits on the south side of Odessa – one of the city’s oldest parts – about 2 miles from Downtown. “That was the original Odessa,” says Earl Anderson, Realtor with Heritage Real Estate, who has lived and worked in the area for over 40 years. Since it was built in the mid-20th century, the neighborhood has witnessed Odessa come into its own as a leader in the oil and gas industry. The city is at the heart of the Permian Basin, which is rich in petroleum, potassium and natural gas. Odessa’s oil fields employ nearly one-fourth of residents, and most are accessible by Interstate 20, which is south of the neighborhood.

Houses typically sell within 33 days
Sidewalks line the streets of Del Rio, interrupted by wide driveways that can lead to carports. The roads also have plenty of room for street parking. Homes either sit on concrete lots or small grassy lawns dotted with oak, pine and towering cypress trees. There is a good stock of manufactured and ranch-style homes from the 1940s and '50s. “They were built at a time when Odessa was a new, young city,” Anderson says. A few of the older builds have been replaced with post-2000 single-story brick homes. Single-family properties average about 1,800 square feet, about 100 square feet below the national average. Houses in need of repairs may list between $50,000 and $60,000, and updated residences generally sell from $170,000 and $240,000.

Starbright Village is holiday tradition
Every December, McKinney Park transforms into Starbright Village, one of Odessa’s favorite traditions. “Starbright Village has got something for everyone,” says Anderson. Folks can drive or stroll through lit-up sculptures of cowboys, reindeer and other holiday symbols while sipping on hot chocolate. Santa sets up shop at Santa Land in the village on Fridays and Saturdays. However, before the gates officially open, the community comes together for the tree-lighting ceremony, where local dance groups and school choirs perform.
Del Rio is near Interstate 20
Like the rest of Odessa, Del Rio is a car-dependent community. Residents can reach U.S. Route 385 – also known as Grant Avenue – and Interstate 20 within 1 mile. “The interstate is so accessible to the whole town,” Anderson says. It connects Odessa with neighboring Midland, about 21 miles away. EZ-Rider has a bus route along Avenida De Mexico and Terlingua Avenue. Midland International Air & Space Port is about 12 miles away. Both Odessa Regional Medical Center and Medical Center Hospital offer health care about 2 miles away.
