Dorothy Lea offers peace in a growing city
Dorothy Lea, in Odessa, is a quiet respite from the growing city. Odessa is at the center of the Permian Basin, rich in petroleum, natural gas and potassium. The booming oil and gas industry has led to a lot of development in the city. “Because a lot of our growth is to the north and the east, the west side is like this little hidden enclave,” says Randy Ham, executive director of Odessa Arts and an Odessa Chamber of Commerce member. “If there’s a place where you’re craving tranquility and quiet, the McKinney area is somewhere you want to go.” McKinney Park is less than 1 mile away, with a playground and splash pad. There are also several restaurants, houses of worship and stores within 2 miles of the neighborhood.
Mid-20th-century ranch styles fill the neighborhood
Sidewalks line the wide streets of Dorothy Lea, where houses sit on grassy lawns that often have a single tree out front. The driveways lead to one-car garages and carports. Almost all the properties are brick or vinyl ranch styles built between the 1950s and 1970s, although some contemporary houses were built in the 2000s and 2010s. Prices for a three-bedroom tend to range from $125,000 to $225,000. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) says that parts of Greenway Park-Lindberg are in a Special Flood Hazard Area. Flood insurance is recommended for all homeowners and required for anyone with a federally backed mortgage.
Dorothy Lea is mainly composed of ranch and traditional homes.

Folks can play a round of disc golf and do their morning jog along the Comanche Trail, which the city uses for 5ks. “It’s one of the prettiest areas I’ve seen,” says Meagan Mendenhall, events manager for the city of Odessa. She attributes this to the thick line of bur oak and pine trees along the paved trail. It runs through McKinney Park, where kids can run around the playground. Families can take advantage of the splash pad and sprinklers during the summer.

McKinney Park becomes Starbright Village in December
Every December, McKinney Park transforms into Starbright Village. People can either drive or stroll through glittering holiday lights displays. Kids can visit Santa Land on Friday and Saturday nights to tell him their wish lists. Before any of that, though, the city comes together for a tree-lighting ceremony. Attendees can enjoy food trucks and carolers before gathering around a towering tree. “We count down from 10, and I click a button, and that whole tree lights up,” Mendenhall says. La Margarita Festival Grounds is an event venue south of the neighborhood that sometimes hosts concerts.
