East Park is a community with newer homes and businesses about 8 miles from Downtown Odessa. “They’ve had a tremendous amount of growth in that area,” says Laura Sales, Realtor and owner of The Sales Team Realtors. This growth can be attributed to the success of the oil and gas industry, which makes up one-fourth of Odessa’s major employers. The city’s location at the heart of the Permian Basin makes it ideal for 1PointFive to build its $1 billion carbon capture. The booming economy has led to new housing, restaurants and stores in Odessa’s northern and eastern parts over the past decade. East Park is only one example of that growth.

Homes built after 1980
Sidewalks line the streets of East Park. “It’s a pretty quiet neighborhood where you can walk your dog,” says Daisy Rodriguez, Realtor with Meraki Homes, LLC, who lives in the area. While pines and oaks grow in some front lawns, many residents have opted to decorate their lawns with bright green grass or rock gardens. Wide driveways lead to two-car garages, although the roads have plenty of room for street parking. Most of East Park is filled with ranch styles and modern prairies built between the late 1980s and the 2010s, making it one of the younger neighborhoods in Odessa. “What really drives that area is the price point,” Sales says. Prices for a three-to-four-four bedroom under 2,000 square feet can range from $200,000 to $275,000, while more than 2,000 square feet typically costs between $275,000 and $350,000.

Casual and upscale eateries along 87th Street
Restaurants border 87th Street. “I think my favorite is this new Mexican restaurant, Don Bolos,” says Rodriguez, attributing this to the restaurant’s upscale atmosphere. Its menu features unique takes on Mexican classics, such as empanadas. More casual eateries in the area include Wingstop and Pizza Hut. Downtown Odessa has more options, including Homemade Wines, which is open for lunch and dinner. The closest grocery stores are Lowe’s Market and H-E-B, about 5 miles away, although Dollar General is less than 1 mile away. Target, Walmart and Home Depot are about 6 miles away, near the Music City Mall. At the mall, shoppers can explore major retailers like Burlington or roller-skate with friends at the Rock N’ Rink.

East Park residents attend Odessa Events
Odessa has a full calendar of events. Several parks throughout the city take turns hosting Movies in the Park, a weekly summer movie night. Starbright Village is a holiday tradition held at McKinney Park every December. Attendees can walk or drive through glittering lights displays and visit Santa on Fridays and Saturdays. Once a month, Odessa Arts partners with Downtown Odessa for First Fridays ODTX. “They’re something new to Odessa,” Rodriguez says. Local businesses set up activities such as a paint and sip from Homemade Wines or making pet rocks with the Ector County Library.

Its football team, the Permian Panthers, shares Ratliff Stadium with Odessa High School. “Odessa High School and Permian High School have had a rivalry since the 1980s,” Rodriguez says. The University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) and Odessa College are both about 6 miles away.

Nearby park and golf links
There are plenty of recreational opportunities surrounding East Park. Lawndale Park is about 1 mile away and features a playground, walking trail and open fields where kids can play a game of soccer. “It’s pretty much your casual neighborhood park,” says Rodriguez, who is also the administrative assistant of Odessa Parks and Recreation. The park also has a community center primarily used as an events and meeting space. Ratliff Ranch Golf Links is about 3 miles away. Scottish style links inspire the rolling hills and changing elevation of the course. After a hole-in-one, golfers can end the day with dinner and a drink from The Linx Bar and Grill inside the clubhouse. The Ellen Noël Art Museum is on UTPB’s campus and features work by more than 200 artists, including Katherine Ace and M.C. Escher. The museum also hosts an art camp and book club.
