Graham sits in the southern part of Odessa, the heart of the Permian Basin. The city is rich in potassium, petroleum and natural gas, and one-fourth of its major employers are in the oil and gas industry. “A lot of people work in the oil fields,” says Realtor Justin Howsey with Turkey Real Estate, who has lived in Odessa his whole life. “They like to live in this area so they can just hit the highway and go.” Interstate 20 and U.S. 385 runs along Graham’s border, so residents can easily travel to work and Downtown Odessa, about 2 miles away.
Graham houses cost less than Odessa average
Thin sidewalks line some of Graham’s wide streets, while others have yards that stretch to the curb. A single oak tree grows in the front lawns, many of which are fenced in. While almost every property has a driveway, there is a lot of street parking. Ranch styles built between the 1950s and 1970s are the most common, although there are some Cape Cods and modest single-story houses with gable roofs. Manufactured homes can also be found throughout the neighborhood, especially near Grant Avenue. “There’s just more affordable housing, I would say,” Howsey says. Prices for a single-family typically range between $75,000 and $150,000, more than $100,000 less than Odessa’s average. Part of the neighborhood is in a Special Flood Hazard Area, as recognized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Flood insurance is recommended for all homeowners and required for anyone with a federally backed mortgage.

Local restaurant hosts First Responders Breakfast
There are plenty of places to grab dinner along Grant Avenue. “Mexican food is very popular here; it’s the main thing that people eat,” Howsey says. He recommends one of the many family-owned eateries in the area, La Margarita Mexican Food, because of its fried avocado. “You wouldn’t think it, but it is so good.” La Margarita is known for more than its good food. Every year, the establishment hosts the annual First Responders Breakfast at the La Margarita Fair Grounds, less than a mile away. Lucy’s Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch. More restaurants are about 2 miles away in Downtown Odessa. The closest grocery store is Lowe’s La Tienda, and there is a Dollar General less than 1 mile away. Home Depot, Walmart and Target are all within 7 miles of Graham.

Graham sits between two parks
Graham is nestled between Salinas Community Park and McKinney Park. Salinas Community Park has a playground and basketball court, while McKinney Park has a sprayground open during the summer. The Comanche Trail is about 2 miles long and cuts through McKinney Park. “Comanche Trail has a lot of trees, so people like to do their walks through there,” Howsey says. Folks also head to the trail for a round of disc golf. While most courses are only nine holes, the Comanche Trail has 18. The Ector County Library is about 2 miles away and hosts story time and book clubs for all ages.

Starbright Village is a holiday tradition
Every December, McKinney Park transforms into Starbright Village, a holiday lights display that has become an Odessa tradition. “We go every year,” Howsey says. The month-long celebration begins with a tree-lighting ceremony that features carolers and local food trucks. While Howsey and his family drive through lights, many visitors stroll through the park, sipping hot chocolate. Santa Land is open every Friday and Saturday night, so kids can share their wish lists with the jolly old man. During the summer, the park is one of several locations for the city’s Movies in the Park, where friends can set up a picnic blanket and watch a movie.
Elementary school expanding student body
As part of Ector County Independent School District, students can start at Zavala Elementary School, which receives a C from Niche. As of fall 2024, it teaches kindergarten through fifth grade. Ector College Prep Middle School earns a C-plus, and Odessa High School has a C. High schoolers can enroll at the B-rated Odessa Career and Technical Early College High School (OCTECHS), where they can earn industry certifications such as paralegal and construction management. OCTECHS is on Odessa College’s campus, about 3 miles away. The community college offers nearly 120 associate degrees and certificate programs.

Interstate 20 runs along Graham
Graham is car-dependent. Interstate 20 and South Grant Avenue border the neighborhood. Howsey says McKinney Park acts as a buffer between the interstate and the homes, helping reduce the impact of the noise from the busy highway. Some public transportation is available, with EZ-Rider offering routes along West Clements Street and South Grant Avenue. Most people fly out of Midland International Air & Space Port, about 13 miles away. Both Odessa Regional Medical Center and Medical Center Hospital are about a 2-mile drive away.
