Sitting adjacent to downtown, McKinney Terrace is a residential neighborhood in Odessa where proximity is paramount. “You’re very close to everything,” says Courtney Maypole, a Realtor with Keller Williams Realty who has a couple of years of real estate experience. “You’re next to downtown, close to the hospitals and so many jobs.” In addition to proximity, price is another factor that draws people to the neighborhood. The median sales price for a home in McKinney Terrace is $135,000, compared to $349,000 for the city of Odessa.
McKinney Terrace
Homes
Cottages built in the mid-1900s line the streets of McKinney Terrace, many including a driveway or a carport. These homes typically cost between $125,000 and $200,000, while the occasional contemporary new-construction home can cost up to $300,000. Metal and wood fences separating properties in the alleyways are common, while some also have chain-link fences in the front yards. Many roadways are wide enough for street parking without impeding passing vehicles, with some areas not having sidewalks.
Shopping and Dining
With downtown Odessa so close, McKinney Terrace residents can access several nearby restaurants. Casa Ortiz Restaurant offers Mexican fare with high remarks for their brisket and chicken flautas. Dozens of pictures and posters from Odessa High School athletics decorate the walls throughout the restaurant. Across Highway 385 is Homemade Wines, a chic winery with dozens of bottles and a wine club. El Sinaloense Mariscos and Bar serves various seafood dishes a block away. H-E-B and Walmart are around 4 miles north on Highway 338.
Schools
San Jacinto Elementary School earns a B-minus from Niche. It has after-school events and fundraisers for students and families, including Math and Fitness Night, where staff leads Zumba dances. Bowie Middle School earns a C and has a dress code for students to follow, with shirt and pants color determined by grade. Teenagers attend Odessa High School, which gets a C-plus-rating and is within walking distance from the neighborhood, less than a mile away.
Transportation
McKinney Terrace is next to downtown Odessa and within walking distance of shops and restaurants. West Eighth Street runs down the center of the neighborhood and has a few bus stops for the EZ-Rider that run into downtown and around town. The Medical Center Health System campus is less than a mile away on the western edge of downtown. A few blocks south is the East Business Loop 20, which leads to the Midland International Air and Space Port airport, about 12 miles away, and into Midland, roughly 21 miles away.
Parks
The closest park to the neighborhood is Floyd Gwin Park, a 45-acre space with sports fields and courts, a playground, a picnic pavilion and swings on artificial grass. “The park is busy year-round and usually sees more people around sunset when it isn’t as hot,” says Daisy Rodriquez, the Administrative Assistant with the City of Odessa Parks and Recreation Department. Floyd Gwin also hosts movies in the park during the summer, with a large projector and big screen that is open to the public to enjoy. McKinney Park is 2 miles south of the neighborhood and hosts Christmas lights drive-thru displays.
