Central Odessa neighborhood with mid-century homes

Normandy Heights sits near the center of Odessa, a couple miles from downtown and access to major roadways leading to the oil fields. “A lot of people here work in the oilfields or service the oilfields,” says Tonya Trower, A broker with Trower Realtors who has around two decades of experience. “They are a major employer here and has led to a lot of people coming in.” The residential neighborhood is in the older part of Odessa, with homes built in the mid-1900s and a few blocks away from Odessa College. The community gets together in nearby downtown for Christmas parades, tree lightings and the Fireworks Fandango every Fourth of July.

Low inventory of ranch-style and bungalow homes

Neighborhood homes on lots, usually between 7,000 square feet and 10,000 square feet, line the wide streets of Normandy Heights, with enough space for street parking without interfering with cars passing by. A modest number of trees sit throughout the neighborhood, ranging in size from a couple of feet to cedar trees taller than the homes near them. National, bungalow and ranch-style houses are common throughout, many including a driveway or a parking port. Prices typically range from $140,000 to $300,000. Trower notes that homes don’t often hit the market in the area. “There are a lot of people coming in and not a lot of inventory.”

Open fields and play equipment at Casa Bella Park

With no parks within the neighborhood boundaries, one of the closest options is Dan Hemphill Central Park, about a mile south. Children rush around on the green artificial grass where the jungle gym and other equipment sit. A couple of miles west on University Boulevard sits Casa Bella Park, where some local sports teams go for practice on the wide-open fields next to a modest playground. A few blocks beyond the park is the Odessa Family YMCA, which offers fitness, sports, and youth development programs.

Walking distance to Odessa College

Burnet Elementary and Bonham Junior High School receive a C-minus-ratings from Niche and are about a mile from the neighborhood. High schoolers can attend Permian High, earning a C-plus rating. Permian’s claim to fame is from the acclaimed book and movie Friday Night Lights, focusing on the school’s 1988 football team. First Odessa Christian Academy, in nearby downtown Odessa, offers private education for Pre-K through 8th-grade students and does not have a rating from Niche. Odessa College is within walking distance from the neighborhood, offering several two and four-year degrees for students looking to continue their education.

Rustic decor at the Barn Door Steakhouse

Normandy Heights residents don’t need to go far to find various restaurants and national chains. A short walk away, near Highway 385, is the Barn Door Steakhouse. The local landmark, with an actual barn door and a plastic cow standing watch on the roof, serves steaks and other entrees in a rustic, barnlike setting. Trower says the steakhouse is a favorite and has been there a long time. A block away is Ajuua’s Mexican Restaurant, offering Mexican favorites and seafood dishes with patio seating in a bright décor. North on 385, near University Boulevard, DG Market offers groceries and household essentials. Big-name retailers, like Walmart, are about three miles west.
