Well-balanced suburban neighborhood near downtown
Only 2 miles south of downtown Ogden, T.O. Smith is a primarily residential neighborhood with a mix of homes conveniently located to shopping and dining. “The neighborhood is close to our historic downtown. We’re about five minutes from any part of Ogden, and anywhere else you might need to go,” says Real Estate Broker Sue Wilkerson with RE/MAX Crossroads, who has over 20 years of experience. T.O. Smith, locally called “Smith”, is named after Thomas O. Smith, a former Ogden School District superintendent. Coincidentally, several Ogden City schools are within walking distance of the neighborhood.
Gridded streets of single-family homes
An eclectic array of homes line Smith’s residential streets. Most are complemented by grassy lawns and surrounded by trees. There are a handful of houses that have driveways, but all come with street parking. Traditional single-stories and brick ranch-style homes built in the 1950s are common. These properties span 1,000 to 2,000 square feet and cost $300,000 to $400,000. Older bungalows from the 1910s with front porches and a cottage core share a similar price. There are also a handful of Queen Annes lining some streets. These homes display Victorian-inspired architecture such as towers with bay windows, front porches and white trim. Prices sit between $400,000 and $550,000. “Most of the houses here are considered historic,” says Real Estate Agent Jenny Erb, owner of 801 Realtors. “Because of their age, they may need some renovations, and that’s a challenge people are willing to take on.”
In addition to single-family homes, Smith has contemporary townhouses and condominium communities scattered throughout the neighborhood. Units range from 500 to 1,500 square feet and cost between $180,000 and $300,000.
Central Ogden’s variety of shops and restaurants
While most of T.O. Smith is residential, the neighborhood is surrounded by commercial spaces. Washington Boulevard is lined with various car dealerships, auto parts stores and essential businesses. Standalone restaurants include Lee’s Mongolian BBQ, with its build-your-own bowls, and El Patron Mexican Grill. Anaya’s Market is an international grocery store on 30th Street with fresh produce and a bakery with authentic pastries and desserts from other countries. Downtown Ogden’s Historic 25th Street is about 2 miles north with unique local shops like Lavender Vinyl and Reborn Vintage. Warren’s Craft Burger serves specialty sandwiches and IPAs, with live music on the weekends. There’s also Roosters Brewing Company, which has house-made brews and serves classic pub fare.
For more options, Newgate Mall is about two miles southwest of Smith and has dozens of department stores and nationally known retailers, including Dillard’s, Foot Locker and Bath & Body Works. There are also multiple eateries in the surrounding area, from chain restaurants to independents. Criddle’s Cafe specializes in diner-style breakfast meals, while Napoli’s Italian Restaurant is more upscale. Costco and Macey’s are two grocery store options in the area.
Getting educated at Ogden public schools
Children living in Smith can start their education at Liberty Elementary School, which earns a C-minus grade from Niche and provides an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme. Liberty originally shared the name “Thomas O. Smith” with the neighborhood but changed it after a complete renovation in 2022. From there, students can attend Mount Ogden Junior High School which receives a C-plus, or head straight to George Washington High School, which teaches grades seven through 12. George Washington maintains a C and offers multiple Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways that provide work-based learning opportunities.
Neighborhood parks with sports facilities
Multiple green spaces break up the neighborhood's suburban landscape. Monroe Park has eight pickleball courts and three baseball diamonds on its grounds, while Orchard Park has a playground with a rope climbing structure. Both have large, open grassy fields as well. Sullivan Hollow Park is a pocket park with walking trails. About a mile east of the neighborhood, Mount Ogden Park is an expansive green space with multiple recreation facilities. Parkgoers can enjoy sports fields, a playground area, a picnic pavilion or play a round at the Mount Ogden Golf Course. Neptune Skating is an indoor roller-skating rink on 27th Street that also has a skate park.
Traveling in and around T.O. Smith
Smith is served by the Utah Transit Authority, which has several bus stops lined along 30th and 36th streets and Monroe and Washington boulevards, which all lend to its gridded streets. “It’s a car-driven neighborhood,” Wilkerson says. “The closest grocery stores are far enough away that you want to drive, and there are quite a few streets where there are big front lawns and not much sidewalk.” US Route 89, known locally as Washington Boulevard, runs along the western edge and can take drivers about 2 miles north into downtown Ogden. Utah state Route 203 – Harrison Boulevard – is another prominent thoroughfare along the east of the neighborhood. The Ogden Regional Airport is roughly 4 miles away, though commercial flights are limited. When needed, the Intermountain Health McKay Dee Hospital is 2.5 miles south.
