Small-town life by Caddo Lake
In the early 1900s, oil wells were drilled into Oil City, and a community formed around the oil field workers who labored there. The history of the small town, population of approximately 876, still shines through in the town’s museum and several oil pumps in Caddo Lake. “A reason people move to Oil City is the lake over there. It’s a very small town,” says Realtor Amanda Hodges who has 5 years of experience in the area and works with Homesmart Realty South. From waterfront homes to water recreation, Oil City residents can experience a slower pace with lakeside living.

Large yards and waterfront properties
Oil City is mostly composed of long roads of spread-out single-family houses and undeveloped land with many acres available for purchase. The yards tend to be spacious and blend in with the natural scenery of the area with wooded lots shaded by flourishing trees. As for architecture, homes range from farmhouses and ranch-style homes to mansions and waterfront houses. “It’s more affordable in general, but houses on the lake are more expensive,” Hodges says. The prices can start from $50,000 for a ranch-style house and go up to $990,000 for a five-bedroom house on Caddo Lake with a boathouse.

Caddo Parish Schools
Students in the area go to Caddo Parish Public Schools, which earns a B rating according to Niche. Schools include Herndon Magnet School for elementary and middle school levels, plus North Caddo High School. The elementary and middle school earns a B-plus grade on Niche, while the high school has a B-minus rating. The high school features courses from Business Computer Applications to Library Science.

Williamson Park on Caddo Lake
Located on Caddo Lake, a sprawling body of water and bayou, Earl G. Williamson Park offers recreation galore: fishing docks, boat ramps and a beach area for swimming. The park also has camping and a playground for children. During the holiday season, locals can also attend the Christmas on Caddo event in the park with fireworks and a visit from Santa Claus.

For groceries and discount goods, locals can go to Dollar General. At Oak Alley Farms, people can find snacks from flavored peanuts to almond brittle. As for restaurants, Ma and Pops serves comfort foods in a casual interior with booth seating. Meltdowns has soul food and southern sides for a lunch spot or big events that need catering. For Mexican food, residents can visit La Herradura, a restaurant with a colorful and relaxed atmosphere.

Unique to Oil City
At the Louisiana State Oil and Gas Museum, residents can learn more about the history of their town and the industries behind the community. Oil City also has special events throughout the year like an Easter bunny meeting in the spring, an Earth Day community clean-up and a national night out complete with live music, hot dogs, plus a bounce house for kids.

28-mile commute
About 28 miles from downtown Shreveport, residents of Oil City can easily commute to the big city via Interstate 49 South by car since there’s no public transit in the area. As for a nearby hospital, locals can go to North Caddo Medical Center. Residents can also access the Shreveport Regional Airport for further travel from business trips to vacations.
