Classen North Highland Park is within walking distance to the State Capitol building.
A historic neighborhood in reach of Automobile Alley
Heading south on Lincoln Boulevard, with the Oklahoma State Capitol Building peaking over the treetops in the rearview, parking lots give way to open green space with walking paths, narrowing from block to block until returning to pavement. A right on NE 13th Street leads to the evolving enclave of Classen North Highland Park, a neighborhood to keep an eye on in Oklahoma City’s urban core. “The area is going through a renaissance right now,” says Jim Miller, a Realtor with Keller Williams-Yukon, who owns a house nearby. Tastefully renovated historic homes and modern new builds are nestled together in this coveted location within walking or biking distance to OKC hotspots and big employers, including the University of Oklahoma Medical Center, which partially accounts for this neighborhood’s many renters. “It's a research hospital. People come in for two to three years at a time, and there are a lot of rental properties in this area for that reason,” Miller says.

A blend of historic homes and modern builds
Local historians suggest that Classen North Highland Park's name is likely tied to its early 20th-century streetscaping. The cozy lots here feature “parking strips,” a wide piece of green space between the street and the sidewalk dotted with a mix of saplings and mature trees. Residents here take advantage of the extra space out front. “There are a lot of impromptu block parties. People will cook in their front yards instead of their backyards,” Miller says. Without historic preservation restrictions, buyers will find an eclectic combination of early 20th-century Craftsman bungalows and Prairie-style homes alongside newly built houses of varying styles, from modern Craftsman to Contemporary. Prices typically fall between $225,000 to more than $1 million; however, homes needing major renovations can be listed at under $200,000.
Classen North Highland Park has plenty of classic homes with contemporary flair.
Visit one of Oklahoma City’s original homesteads
A piece of OKC history, the Harn Homestead, lies north of the neighborhood. At this popular field trip destination, visitors can get a glimpse of land-run commissioner William Harn's 1897 frontier life through a tour of his family's farmhouse and hands-on homestead activities, including a lesson in butter churning. Once they've mastered homesteading, kids can be set loose on William Freemont Harn Park's playground next door. Residents can join the University Health Club, which offers varying membership levels, to access an indoor gym, pool and rock-climbing wall.
Breakfast, dinner and drinks in Automobile Alley
Aptly named for being the location of OKC’s first car dealerships and automakers, Automobile Alley is where Classen North Highland Park residents can get a bite to eat and hang out into the wee hours of the morning. Packard's New American Kitchen serves a hearty brunch of honey butter-dolloped buttermilk pancakes and praline bacon. Dinner spot Broadway 10 Bar & Chophouse is known for its steakhouse specialties, like Chopped Beef Wellington with smoked gouda mashed potatoes. Locals head to the popular Sidecar Barley and Wine Bar for inventive craft cocktails on the charming outdoor patio. For fun, Factory Obscura Mix Tape, a local artist collaborative, offers interactive and immersive art experiences. When it’s time to stock up on the essentials, the nearest Homeland or Walmart Neighborhood Market is a short drive away.

A standout elementary school
Classen North Highland Park's youngest residents can attend the well-regarded Wilson Arts Integration Elementary School. A Kennedy Center's Partners in Education program school, Wilson earns a B grade from Niche. Children can move on to F.D. Moon Middle and then Frederick Douglass High, the 2023 Class 4A state basketball championship winner. Both schools receive C-minus ratings. Miller says it’s common for families in this neighborhood to apply for their children to attend the A-rated John Rex Elementary School. Nearby private options include the Young Achievers Academy and the Academy of Classical Christian Studies.

Drive around OKC
Despite easy access to public transportation with EMBARK bus stops along NE 13th Street, Miller admits, “We’re definitely a car culture.” There’s plenty of parking available from on-street to paid lots, and though close to the Capitol building, traffic isn’t an issue here. For cyclists, NE 16th Street is considered a bike-friendly route, connecting to more bikeable streets on the other side of Interstate 235, which is easily accessible to drivers here. Downtown OKC is a mile south, and Will Rogers World Airport is about a 17-mile drive via I-235, I-40 and I-44.
