Vibrant, walkable enclave near OKC's urban core
Mere minutes from Oklahoma City's urban core, the Classen Ten Penn neighborhood is aptly named for its connection to three main thoroughfares -- Classen Boulevard, 10th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue -- granting easy access to Midtown, Uptown and the Asian District. "People say centrally located a lot, but this neighborhood actually is," says David Chitwood, a Realtor with Verbode. "It's right in the pocket of where all the things are." Residents enjoy walkable convenience, including access to the vibrant Plaza District, home to beloved local shops, restaurants and bars. Away from the bustle of the surrounding districts, quiet residential streets await residents after brunch or a shopping spree.
Eclectic Plaza District and nearby local shops
Some of OKC's best hidden gems await residents along nearby thoroughfares. The shelves at Trolley Stop Record Shop are stocked with vinyl, CDs and band memorabilia. Occasionally the record shop is rocking with live music from local and touring bands and artists. After finding their favorite vinyl, residents can drive down 16th Street for a meal in the Plaza District. This popular OKC district has beloved local eateries like Empire Slice House, which serves tasty pizza slices and brews. Residents can head to Up-Down OKC to let their inner child out and play arcade games or go to Radbar for happy hour.
Plaza District events
The Plaza District is abuzz with events throughout the year, from Pride on the Plaza to the annual Summer Block Party. Live music fills the streets during the Plaza District Festival, which has been running for 25 years. Community spirit is strong during the festival, as 16th Street is lined with local vendors, artists and interactive art exhibits. After perusing all of the vendor booths, visitors can snack on OKC's best food trucks. Dog lovers head to Live! on the Pawza to possibly adopt a new best friend, or take their pup to win the top prize during the fashion show.
Classic homes and renovated properties
Homes throughout Classen Ten Penn range in style and age, so it's rare to see two of the same homes next to each other. Everything from Craftsman houses built in the early 1900s to renovated midcentury traditional homes are represented throughout the community. "It's not a designated historic neighborhood like others, but the richness of the neighborhood is very clear," Chitwood says. He continues to say that prospective residents will often buy a lot and rebuild the property. "People really enjoy living here, and they often stay here for a while," Chitwood adds. House prices can range from $200,000 for traditional two-bedroom homes up to the mid-700s for renovated homes.
Easy traveling around OKC
Classen Ten Penn's location in OKC's urban core is one of its biggest selling points. Residents can get to several different areas, including midtown, downtown and the Asian District in a matter of minutes. Public transportation is available in abundance in this area, with Embark bus stops dotted along the main thoroughfares.
McKinley Park
When the weather is nice, parents take their children to McKinley Park. The park's splash pad provides relief during hot summer days, and the playground keeps kids busy throughout the rest of the year.
Nearby public schools
Many students can walk to class at Eugene Field Elementary School, part of the Oklahoma City Public Schools district. Eugene Field Elementary is followed by F.D. Moon Middle School and Frederick Douglass High School. All schools received C-minus grades on Niche.
