A historic neighborhood with a stellar elementary school and connected neighbors
With quiet streets, engaged neighbors, eclectic historic homes, and a first-rate elementary school, Cleveland UCD stands out as a historic gem 5 miles west of Downtown Oklahoma City. The neighborhood was established in 1933 and designated an Urban Conservation District in 1982. The area features an array of bungalows, Tudor Revivals, Colonial Revivals and Craftsman-style homes. Tree-lined streets create a serene and picturesque environment, while sidewalks and front porches foster neighborly interaction and a strong sense of community. These design elements encourage residents to engage with one another, enhancing the neighborhood's tight-knit atmosphere. "It's a wonderful neighborhood with an outstanding neighborhood association. Homes sell quickly in Cleveland, and for top dollar," says Carla Splaingard, an associate and historic specialist at Re/Max Preferred Realty who has lived and worked in OKC for more than 20 years. The area's active neighborhood association is crucial in maintaining the community's charm and appeal, making the community a highly sought-after location in Oklahoma City.

Tudor Revival, Craftsman and Traditional homes under $500,000
Cleveland UCD features a unique mix of houses primarily built in the 1930s and 1940s in a range of historic pre- and post-war architectural styles, including Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Craftsman and even Art Deco. Many homes have been well-preserved or restored, maintaining their original charm and architectural details. Being designated as an Urban Conservation District helps protect the historical and architectural integrity of the area, including guidelines and restrictions on modifications to ensure that changes match the historical character of the neighborhood. Most homes have driveways with one- or two-car garages, but residents also utilize street parking. Along with the range of house styles, there's also a range of house prices. Great Expectations at Cleveland Elementary School
"Cleveland Elementary is a highly acclaimed school, which makes Cleveland a sought-after neighborhood," Splaingard says of the institution, which is rated B on Niche. Kids in pre-kindergarten through grade 4 are taught using the Great Expectations teaching model, a professional development methodology for teachers and administrators created by Oklahoma Hall of Fame nominee Charlie Hollar. In 2022, the school won the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture's Best Community Collaboration Award for its student education garden created in partnership with OKC Beautiful, an affiliate of the Keep America Beautiful organization. Students in fifth through eighth grades can attend the C-minus Taft Middle School. The school is the site of the historic Taft Stadium, which was built during the Great Depression and extensively renovated in 2015. Northwest Classen High School receives a C from Niche and offers career and technology education programs. Students can earn industry certification and credentials in concentrations like agriculture, marketing, and business and information technology.

Regular events bring the neighborhood together
Cleveland residents have deep-rooted pride in their neighborhood. With historic Venice Boulevard connecting the Cleveland UCD and Venice neighborhoods, residents work together through a joint voluntary neighborhood association to maintain and improve their communities. The group sponsors several events throughout the year, such as garage sales and a Fourth of July parade. Word on the street — or, in this case, the boulevard — is that the neighborhood is a trick-or-treater’s paradise on Halloween.

Community gatherings on Venice Boulevard
Venice Boulevard's wide, tree-lined median is a popular neighborhood gathering spot for community events and food truck nights, but residents also enjoy the boulevard green space for walking their dogs, spending a peaceful moment in the gazebo or borrowing a book from the community's Little Free Library. When neighbors aren't watching high school football teams face off under the Friday night lights at Taft Stadium, they can enjoy a picnic under the cypress trees or a romp around the playground at nearby Denniston Park. Swatek Park is in the neighboring Shepherd community and has a covered pavilion where residents host birthday parties, baby showers and potlucks. After warming up on the fitness equipment, walkers and joggers can take to the paved trails around the park. Residents are close to some of OKC's biggest attractions like the Paseo Arts District, which is less than 3 miles away and home to more than 20 art galleries and 80 artists. Visitors to Will Rogers Gardens less than 2 miles away will find year-round blooms, beautiful green spaces and hands-on gardening and horticulture classes.
