Coronado Heights

Midcentury styles on winding streets
Like many northwest Oklahoma City neighborhoods, Coronado Heights was a product of the city's post-war expansion, so most homes were built between 1945 and 1969. However, unlike large swaths of the city, this community is a reprieve from urban grid living. “The city has that uniqueness of being set up before anyone moved in. For the most part, there have been very few departures from the grid, but every now and then, the developer thought, let's change this,” Miller says. Since ranch-style blueprints were trendy during the midcentury, most homes here tend to have elements typical of that style: low-slung roofs, one-story floorplans, brick facades and attached garages or carports. Houses usually have two or three bedrooms, with prices ranging from about $125,000 to just under $300,000, depending on size and condition.Going to class in Putnam City Schools
The neighborhood’s youngest children can attend Coronado Heights Elementary School. A quick walk from many homes, it offers afterschool care and several student enrichment programs, including chorus, strings orchestra, and intramural soccer, basketball and track. Students can move on to James L. Capps Middle School, where they can choose between several clubs and sports teams, depending on their interests, like the TSA/robotics or guitar clubs and the football or cross country teams. Teens can finish their degrees at the home of the Pirates, Putnam City High School, which has various athletic teams and groups for students, including the annual spring dance show and the competitive esports gaming team. All three schools earn a B-minus from Niche. Two parks within a mile
For fresh air and exercise, families here head over to Dolese Youth Park, which, despite its name, offers fun for all ages. On its 156 acres, visitors can catch Largemouth Bass or Rainbow Trout in the fishing pond, get their steps in while strolling the 2-mile walking trail, or climb and slide on the playground. “Dolese is where we used to run for cross country in high school. Ran there a couple times a year. Great for disc golf,” Miller recalls. Disc throwers can try their hand at the 18-hole course. There’s also a handful of soccer and baseball fields. Closer to home, residents can enjoy a walk, a tennis match or a run around the playground at North Rotary Park's 44 acres of open green space. The neighborhood is also about a mile from the sailing, golfing and sunset views at Lake Hefner.
Beloved barbecue at Clark Crew BBQ
Coronado Heights is conveniently located to the all-important two Rs: retail and restaurants. Quick access to the Northwest Expressway means that Penn Square Mall, a popular OKC indoor shopping mecca with 140 stores and restaurants, is an easy 3-mile drive away. For everyday essentials, Pruett’s Food is right around the corner. The neighborhood is also close to the commercial corridor along May Avenue which features national brands like Target, The Home Depot and Barnes & Noble. For a bite to eat close to home, locals dine at Clark Crew BBQ for some award-winning smokey barbecue. “That is one of the best barbecue spots and we’re talking about a city full of barbecue. I love their burnt ends. They were the first ones to do that dish well,” Miller raves. Residents can cap off the meal with a sweat treat at Arbuckle Mountain Fried Pies, where customers have a choice of delectable flavors such as cherry, blackberry, pecan or peanut butter chocolate.Drive, bike or ride around Oklahoma City
On trend with most of OKC, Coronado Heights residents drive to get around. Cyclists can ride the multi-use Will Rogers Trail down to the expansive Will Rogers Park or up to Lake Hefner. EMBARK bus stops are available on NW 63rd Street and N Portland Avenue. Downtown OKC is about six miles away, and Will Rogers Airport is a 12-mile drive via State Highway 3 and Interstate 44.
