Lakeside living in northwest Oklahoma City
Living less than a mile from the lapping shores of a sparkling, 2,500-acre lake with grassy parks hugging its banks, lively waterfront restaurants and a classic, whitewashed lighthouse silhouetted against golden sunsets sounds like a dream. But residents of Oklahoma City's aptly named Edgewater-Lakepointe neighborhood don't have to imagine it; this lifestyle is part of their daily routine. This peaceful, well-established community sits near the southern end of Lake Hefner and is made up of over 800 single-family homes built in the 1960s, as well as condos and apartments. "This was a fancy neighborhood when it was built, and it still kind of carries that weight. It has kept its character over the years," says Jim Miller, a Realtor with Keller Williams-Yukon and a lifelong OKC resident. "It has a tucked-away feel, yet it's in the middle of the city," Miller adds.

Outdoor recreation on the shores of Lake Hefner
Sidewalk-lined North Portland Avenue, which runs through the center of the neighborhood, provides residents with an easy half-mile drive, walk or bike ride to all that Lake Hefner offers. At the lake's Stars and Stripes Park, visitors can practice kickflips and ollies at the skatepark, toss a ball at the baseball field, or climb and slide at the patriotic-themed playground. For more kid-centric fun, there's the Lion's Children's Playground, which has a myriad of play structures and swing sets with a handicap-accessible, cushioned ground surface for safety. Since Lake Hefner is, technically, a reservoir and city water source, swimming in the lake isn't allowed. But other aquatic-based activities, like fishing, boating, kayaking and paddle boarding, are welcome. For lakegoers who prefer to stay on dry land, Lake Hefner boasts a 9-mile paved trail for walking or biking, two public golf courses at Lake Hefner Golf Club, and even a 12-acre remote-control aircraft field with a 250-foot-long runway.

Traditional, ranch-style and midcentury builds on peaceful streets
Homes here have eloquently manicured yards and rest on serene, picturesque streets with a storybook feel. This is exemplified in the Lakepointe Estates subdivision, where mailboxes sit in brick columns at the end of stately driveways. Properties in this coveted community don't stay on the market long. "Usually, it's tough to get a property there. You need to keep an eye out and be ready to act," Miller says. "Some neighborhoods spike and dip in terms of condition and popularity, but Edgewater-Lakepointe has a gentler curve. People still want to live there. I want to live there," adds Miller with a chuckle. Buyers will find three or four-bedroom single-family homes with attached two-car garages in traditional, ranch-style, midcentury and Dutch Colonial-inspired designs. Prices range from $190,000 to just under $500,000. Condos start around $70,000.

Dining with stunning sunset views
Residents can drive over to Lake Hefner's East Wharf area to dine at several lakeside restaurants offering stunning sunset views. "There can be hundreds of people watching the sunset over the lake. It's a big, big thing," Miller emphasizes. There's the Hefner Grill for seafood lovers, where diners can enjoy Sea Bass Florentine or Pecan Crusted Trout while listening to live jazz. And for those who prefer a frozen margarita, hand-rolled chimichanga or chips with loaded queso, head over to Mama Roha Mexican Kitchen for food and drink specials during their weekday Fiesta Hour. For daily essentials and pleasure shopping, the Northwest Expressway connects residents to May Avenue, featuring stores like Sprouts Farmers Market, The Home Depot and Target, and Penn Square Mall, offering 140 stores and a Walmart Supercenter next door.
