Proximity to local businesses draw people in
With a name like Frequent Flyers, one might assume that this southern Oklahoma City neighborhood is most known for its proximity to the airport. However, Realtor Eric Avalos with Top State Realty says otherwise. “It’s close to the airport, sure, but most people moving to this part of town are moving here to be closer to family and closer to the businesses that they go to every day,” he says. These local businesses, such as the nearby La Lomita Bakery de Oaxaca, are at the heart of the community. Avalos says that the proximity to major employers is another draw, with offices for Hobby Lobby and Amazon about 5 miles away. Downtown Oklahoma City is about 9 miles away.

Local businesses popular among residents
The restaurants and businesses that surround the community are part of what draws people to Frequent Flyers. “There are a lot of Latino businesses and restaurants around here that people love,” Avalos says. “If they look in another part of town, they won’t find the specific products or goods they’re looking for on a daily basis.” One eatery that he says is incredibly popular is La Cocina de Doña Nena, an authentic Mexican restaurant with an open kitchen. The nearby Charleston’s Restaurant is known for its steak and ribs. There are several grocery stores in the area, including Aldi. Feria Latina Supermarket is a specialty market that draws in people from across Oklahoma City and surrounding towns. “Everyone, even from Edmond, Guthrie, they’ll come here to shop,” Avalos says. Home Depot and Walmart are about 6 miles away.

Cultural events at Scissortail Park
Avalos says that many of the most popular events in southern Oklahoma City are cultural celebrations like Dia de los Muertos. “All of the Hispanic festivals are around here,” he says. Locals gather at Scissortail Park for a festival filled with music, dancing, food and art. “There’s music everywhere – all kinds of music,” Avalos says. People can commemorate their lost loved ones at the community ofrenda and compete in a Catrina costume contest.

Wood siding on ranch styles
Live oaks dot the grassy lawns that fill the Frequent Flyers community. Most of the homes are 1950s ranch styles with driveways that sometimes lead to carports but are more often left uncovered. Garages are a rarity. “This is one of the older neighborhoods in this part of the city, so there’s more wood siding than brick on the houses here,” Avalos says. However, he believes that more brick houses will pop up as people renovate these homes. “That’s really how you can mark the economic progress in a lot of neighborhoods around here when the siding changes from wood to brick.” Prices for a two- to three-bedroom range from $75,000 to $175,000. These prices trend significantly lower than the national average. The Federal Emergency Management Agency says that the neighborhood is at a very high risk of tornadoes. Most homeowner’s insurance will cover wind and storm damage.

Nearby parks and museums
The nearby Woodson Park is bisected by Interstate 44. “It’s been recently updated, and they have fields for every sport,” Avalos says. Walking trails fill the western part of the park, taking people past several soccer, football and baseball fields at the Wendel Whisenhunt Sports Complex and a sprawling play structure that kids can climb on. To the east of the interstate, a swimming pool is open during the summer, and there are more fields where people can play. The 99s Museum of Women Pilots is inside the Will Rogers World Airport. It features a collection of exhibits that include a timeline of Amelia Earheart’s flights and the history of Women Auxiliary Service Pilots, or WASPs.

Car-dependent near the airport
Frequent Flyers residents are car-dependent, with access to interstates 240 and 44 within 3 miles of homes. There is some public transportation in the area, with Embark offering a bus route along South Portland Avenue. Will Rogers World Airport is about 3 miles away; although the airport is so close, Avalos says it has little impact on the community. The Community Hospital is about a 4-mile drive.
