History at the doorsteps of eclectic arts and culture
Sandwiched between two of Oklahoma City’s most popular hotspots for food and entertainment, the historic Gatewood neighborhood serves up early 20th-century architectural charm, surrounded by modern amenities like trendy restaurants and hip art galleries. “Gatewood is one of the most desirable core neighborhoods of Oklahoma City,” says Jim Miller, real estate agent with Keller Williams-Yukon. Miller notes the neighborhoods carries itself differently than the rest of OKC. “It really has the feel of a European town. It’s just a different feel than everything else around it.” With Gatewood’s walkability being an asset people are always out and about. “Gatewood is the major walkable neighborhood in Oklahoma City,” says Carla Splaingard, long-time Gatewood resident and associate at Re/Max Preferred Realty. “Folks are out and about walking all the time. Walking their kids to school. Walking to church or out to dinner,” she adds. According to Splaingard, Gatewood’s walkability contributes to its highly sought-after status. “It’s getting tough to buy property in Gatewood. People like the lifestyle and tend to stay. The walkability to the Plaza District and the uniqueness of the neighborhood make it an exceptional quality-of-life neighborhood. It’s just a place where folks want to be.”
Historic homes
Gatewood began as land claimed by Oklahoma settlers and later purchased by early Oklahoma City developers, including John Shartel and Anton Classen. Gatewood land was home to OKC’s first institution of higher learning, Epworth University, thanks to Shartel and Classen. As members of the newly formed University Development Company, they helped guarantee funding and land for the development of the university. Epworth University closed in 1911, but it served as the precursor for the current-day Oklahoma City University, which is located just north of Gatewood. The development of Gatewood flourished throughout the 1920s and soon an abundance of popular home styles of the day, like Tudor Revivals and bungalows, sprang up throughout the area. Today, homebuyers will find both single-family and multi-unit homes built between 1905 and 1940 with some newer homes dotted around, too. Each house is unique in this eclectic neighborhood, so home sizes can range anywhere from 800 to 4,000 square feet. And home prices can run from $200,000 up to $1 million, depending on size and condition.
Oklahoma City Public Schools
Some students in Gatewood begin at Eugene Field Elementary School, moving on to F.D. Moon Middle School, and Douglass High School. All three schools are part of the Oklahoma City Public School District and rated C-minus on Niche. Rosary School at St. Francis Catholic Church is a popular and highly regarded private school option.
McKinley Park
McKinley Park is named after Margaret McKinley, one of Oklahoma City's most successful entrepreneurs, and has been a part of Gatewood since first opening in 1933. The park features a recreation center and gymnasium along with multiple ball fields and a walking path.
Uptown 23rd and Plaza Districts add food and fun
The Uptown 23rd District and the Plaza District is filled with restaurants, bars and entertainment venues, Uptown 23rd is a popular place for good food and fun. Chow down on chicken fried steak with a spicy twist — think jalapeno gravy — at Cheever’s Cafe. Or, solve a puzzling mystery and win your freedom at The Escape OKC. Gatewood locals also love to flock to the Plaza District, known for its mix of restaurants, coffee shops, stores and art galleries. Whether you prefer to peruse work by local artists at DNA Galleries or sip a cold beer over a game of skeeball at Up-Down Arcade Bar, there’s always a good time to be had at the Plaza. “Gatewood buts up against the Plaza District which is one of the coolest places in Oklahoma City to live, shop and eat,” Miller adds.
Gatewood Historic District residents uphold community pride
Gatewood’s active and committed neighborhood association holds several events throughout the year to support and unite the community. From home and garden tours and garage sales to holiday socials and porch crawls, there’s always something to get involved in. The association also spearheads initiatives to maintain and improve the neighborhood. Their recent Triangle Park project is a good example. With that initiative, the community aims to transform and beautify the triangle-shaped plot of land at the intersection of N Indiana Ave and NW 21st Street. According to the association’s website, plans are in place to create “a focal art installation anchored in landscaping that articulates to residents, businesses, and visitors ‘Welcome to Gatewood. This is who we are.’”
