A southern Oklahoma City neighborhood that's all about convenience
Hillcrest is a small neighborhood in southern Oklahoma situated along the banks of Brock Creek. Main thoroughfares border the quiet residential streets on three sides and the rolling greens of the Hidden Trails Golf and Country Club on the fourth. Those living within the neighborhood have quick access to nearby daily amenities and Oklahoma City Community College, as well as relatively short commutes into downtown Oklahoma City. This, paired with its comparatively affordable housing prices, makes Hillcrest an ideal location for those seeking city convenience without the extra hassle.
Affordability in Hillcrest
The neatly arranged interior streets of Hillcrest are lined with single-family Ranch-style homes built in the mid-20th century. Most are classic brick, but some come with creative decorative brick or stone facades and even occasional gingerbread details. Homes are closely spaced, with deep front lawns making up for the lack of a side yard. Hillcrest is more affordable than some other neighborhoods in Oklahoma City, with the median home price just under $200,000, about $50,000 below the median for the city. Rows of Mansard-influenced apartments and townhomes featuring dramatic shingled rooflines surround the neighborhood. These complexes act as a buffer between the interior residential streets and the busy roads running along Hillcrest’s perimeter. Those looking to purchase a home in the Hillcrest community can expect a price range from $150,000 for a two-bedroom home to $230,000 for an updated three-bedroom house.
Tacos to go from Taqueria Express
“There is easy access to nearby shopping and dining from Hillcrest,” Explains Maria Sanchez, a leasing associate with the Magnolia Village Apartments at the northern end of Hillcrest. A local favorite is Taqueria Express, a walk-up Mexican restaurant known for its asada fries and quick service. Nearby, along Southwest 59th Street, is an Aldi where locals can pick up groceries for the week before exploring the retail options at Penn Park Shopping Center. The strip mall is home to Marshall’s, Ross and several other popular retailers. After a day of adventuring, a cone of fresh ice cream can be enjoyed at the Oklahoma staple Braum’s Ice Cream & Dairy Store just south of the neighborhood.
Sledding at Lightning Creek Park
During the holiday season, many head to North Pole Adventure, located less than a mile away. Guests are welcomed with a cup of hot cocoa before exploring Santa’s workshop and enjoying cookies from Mrs. Claus’ Kitchen. Residents also flock to nearby Lightning Creek and Syl Goldman Parks on snow days to sled down the hilly landscapes.
Getting involved at U.S Grant High School
Located at the heart of the community and within walking distance of most homes is Hillcrest Elementary School, which has received a C grade from Niche and is where young students begin their journey. Following this, students can attend Jefferson Middle School, which has earned a C-minus grade from Niche before attending U.S. Grant High School. The high school offers a number of clubs for students to get involved in, like the USG Technology Students Association and National Honor Society and has also received a C from Niche.
Swimming at Earlywine Park
Just south of the neighborhood is Earlywine Park, where many head in the summer to take a dip in the pools of its aquatic center. The park is also known to be a great place for peaceful walks along its paved trail. Meanwhile, golf fans don’t have to go far, as Hidden Trails Golf & Country Club borders Hillcrest to the east. It is home to sparkling ponds, an 18-hole golf course, as well as pickleball and a full-service restaurant for members.
Commuting from Hillcrest
“A huge draw for the neighborhood is its proximity to nearby interstates,” says Sanchez, in reference to Interstates 44 and 240. Those commuting to downtown Oklahoma City can reach the city in a 9.1-mile drive, thanks to I-44. Travelers from the neighborhood can reach their flight at Will Rogers World Airport in a short 3.4-mile trip via Southwest 54th Street, while visits to INTREGRIS Health Southwest Medical Center are a convenient 2.8-mile drive along South May Avenue. Anyone attending classes at Oklahoma City Community College can reach campus in a short 3-minute bike ride.
The planes of Will Rogers World Airport
Sitting just west of Hillcrest is World Rogers Airport. Though this makes for convenient trips for travelers, it also comes with a fair bit of overhead noise. Though many consider planes coming in and out of the international airport to be background noise, those sensitive to sound may want to consider this before moving into the neighborhood.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data.
