A convergence of culture and commuter routes
From its location to its culture, Industrial Heights is where things converge and combine, from highways and bike lanes to American diners and Mexican cantinas. Though perhaps not the city's poster child for multiculturalism and intricate mixed-use design, changes have and continue to occur, growing what to do and how to get there. "It's a place that I think people should keep an eye on for sure," says Realtor Lara White of Modern Abode Realty. Still, residents' unpretentious pride in their community is evident from the businesses and institutions that broadly define everyday life in Industrial Heights. “They’re looking to stay close to family, in the community they know and love,” says Realtor Eric Avalos with Metro First Realty.

Split by Interstate 44
Interstate 44 conspicuously cuts through the neighborhood. Immediate access to I-44 comes from a frontage road in the neighborhood, and additional access ramps are reachable on 29th Street. Although the car-friendly design releases more vehicles onto residential streets, residents can grab a bus at a stop on 44th Street. Walking is also an option considering most streets contain ADA-accessible sidewalks and crosswalks. The neighborhood also has direct connections with the South Grand Boulevard Trail, offering miles of protected, paved trails for cycling as an alternative to driving east or north.
Disc golf and bike rides at Woodson Park
Measuring 156 acres, the wide-open bifold of Woodson Park has been the community's anchor since 1909, when the city built it along with three other parks in each corner of the city. Originally named Southwest Park, the area was a grain farm for the Oklahoma City Zoo. Today, the park is run through by I-44 but remains the neighborhood's most important asset. Locals use it for long morning walks, recreational sports, dips in the pool and disc golf outings. A footbridge spanning I-44 connects both sides of the park. On the west side, locals practice for their next league match at the Wendel Whisenhunt Sports Complex, a recently renovated $13 million athletic complex featuring soccer and baseball fields, playgrounds and ADA-accessible spectator areas. On the opposite side of Woodson Park, locals pick up the South Grand Avenue Trail and ride their bikes east to Oliver Park.

Cevice at Cocina Del Parke
Latino restaurants and businesses surround Woodson Park, including longstanding taco food carts like Taqueria El Dolar and Mexican grocery stores like Carniceria Jalisco. “If people look in another part of town, they won’t find the specific products or goods they’re looking for on a daily basis," Avalos says. A few options are even located inside Woodson Park, like Cocina Del Parke, where locals cool off with ceviche and ice cream. When looking for a different style of cuisine, Sydney's offer a laid-back diner setting with simple American fares. For nightlife, locals head to Lucky's Pool Room to play billiards, darts and all other kinds of bar games. Chain restaurants sit north of Woodson Park along 29th Street, and a Cash Saver grocery store on May Avenue assists with home-cooked meals.

Midcentury ramblers tell the neighborhood's story
History is subtly told through the neighborhood's seemingly unassuming home designs. Industrial Heights was developed during the mid-20th century and still sports the bygone era's architectural trappings. “You can see the economic progress of the folks around here in the siding on these houses," Avalos says. "When they began to get more job opportunities and pay raises, they started building in brick, which is why we see a lot more brick houses in neighborhoods like this one.” Ramblers are the predominant design that spawned from that trend, many of which remain today. But not all of them have been neatly upkept. "Some of them are seeing some age, but then I also see there's some revitalization going on, so you might see one or two on each street that looks nice," White says. Those needing repairs are typically priced between $55,000 and $95,000. For a rambler in turnkey condition, those often sell for between $135,000 and $200,000.

Teen nights at Triumph Family Worship
Religious institutions offer a vital community touchpoint for residents. Many build connections and friendships at ministry events, small groups and worship at neighborhood churches like American Missionary Church. For teens, Triumph Family Worship's recurring "Gatherings" event offers a helpful outlet for entertainment and socializing during the week. For adults, Lucky's Pool Room widens the list of neighborhood activities with regular pool tournaments.
Things to consider
A constant cacophony of car horns marks the everyday environment of Industrial Heights, which sits adjacent to a major highway interchange. Snug between that interchange and May Avenue, its location also spells heavy traffic. These factors dovetail with each other during peak commuting hours, not to mention an all-day background of faint noise from the Will Rogers World Airport.
