Jackson
Original and updated 1950s housing
Prices run anywhere from $75,000 to more than $250,000 for homes in Jackson. Jamerson says it’s hard to nail down an average price point here because the homes are so varied, both in size and condition. “There are homes as small as 800 square feet and homes as big as 1,900 square feet in this same neighborhood,” she says, adding that many of the houses are original 1950s-era construction. “A lot of these old homes pretty much haven’t been touched since the '50s, and there’s been a lot of renovation in the area lately to make them a little more current.” Homes in Jackson typically go under contract in less than a month. “It seems like the homes that sell faster are the smaller homes, but it really just depends on whether it’s been updated,” says Jamerson.Oklahoma City Public Schools
Neighborhood kids are served by the Oklahoma City Public Schools district. The exact path they take depends on their address, so parents are advised to check the boundary maps ahead of registration time. In general, kids in the south half of the neighborhood go to Coolidge Elementary and Roosevelt Middle, both of which earn C-minus grades from Niche. Then they continue to U.S. Grant High, which earns a C. Kids in the north half of the neighborhood go to Rockwood Elementary, Mary Golda Ross Middle and Northwest Classen High. Rockwood earns a C-minus from Niche, while Mary Golda Ross Middle earns a D-plus and Northwest Classen earns a C. Established in 1955, Northwest Classen is one of two schools in the district with an Academy of Health Sciences, a magnet program that draws students interested in pursuing careers in health and healthcare from around the city.Woodson and Wheeler Parks
There are two parks close to home: Woodson Park and Wheeler Park. At Woodson, locals can swim laps or take lessons at the public indoor pool in the gymnasium. Close to the pool, there’s the Woodson Senior Activity Center and Wendel Whisenhunt Sports Complex. There are nearly 20 youth and adult soccer fields, complete with ADA-accessible spectator areas and concessions, an adult baseball field, a basketball round and even a playground at the sports complex. Wheeler Park is home to the Wheeler Ferris Wheel, and hosts all kinds of local events, from a weekly farmers market in the summer to regular cycling festivals.Shop and dine local
“There are a lot of mom-and-pop shops in the area, like convenience stores, small gas stations, and a lot of unique places like body shops and hardware stores,” says Jamerson, adding that the area is known for its diverse cuisine options, too. “It’s a little bit of a melting pot,” she says. There are several popular market-style grocery stores, including El Rodeo Carniceria, La Michoacana Meat Market, Feria Latina Supermarket and Carniceria Jalisco, within just a couple miles of home. On Southwest 29th Street, which runs through Jackson’s north half, locals can enjoy Laotian and Thai food at Four J’s or classic Mexican fare at El Pariente and Los Chilaquiles. For more groceries and everyday essentials, the closest Walmart Neighborhood Market is less than 4 miles away, off Southwest 44th Street. “And you’re minutes from the Interstate 240 corridor, which has all your big stores. You get the best of both. If you want to shop small and local, it’s right here, but if you want to go to a big box store, they’re right there,” says Jamerson. The I-240 corridor, with everything from Walmart Supercenter and Lowe’s to Academy Sports and Best Buy, is about 6 miles south of home.Easy commuting by bus, car or plane
Stops along OKC’s EMBARK bus lines are close at hand, spaced evenly on the main thoroughfares in and around the neighborhood. “Public transportation is pretty heavily used here compared to other parts of the city. There are some parts of Oklahoma City that literally do not have public transportation at all,” says Jamerson. Interstate 44 bustles by less than a mile west, connecting north to Interstate 40, which runs parallel to the river directly east to downtown. Via I-40, the 5-mile drive downtown can take under 15 minutes, depending on traffic. Will Rogers World Airport is the same distance, in the opposite direction: 5 miles southwest across I-44.
