The heart of the Innovation District
Home to some of Oklahoma City’s first Black-owned businesses, like Jay-Kola and the Jewel Theatre, the John F. Kennedy neighborhood is considered the heart of the Innovation District. “We have a lot of students from The Oklahoma University Medical Center passing through,” says Sinn Human, a barista at Culture Coffee off NE 6th Street. “We’ve even had politicians and representatives speak at the shop. Culture Coffee is literally named after the civil rights leaders that the neighborhood honors.”
New traditional homes neighboring the OU medical campus
The JFK neighborhood offers an array of new traditional homes, contemporary ranch-style homes and modern shed homes. Many feature brick or stone exteriors with neat lawns and properties divided by trimmed hedges. For between $150,000 and $250,000, folks can find one or two-story houses with two-car garages and plenty of street parking. Students from the neighboring medical campus rent from apartment buildings like The Seven, aptly named after seven prominent civil rights activists.

The coffee shop closes, and the bistro opens
Residents can find a wide variety of small businesses downtown or while perusing Bricktown and Deep Deuce. But amenities are often further outside the city, tucked into the OKC suburbs. The Market at EastPoint is less than 2 miles north along NE 23rd Street, but Crest Foods and Walmart are 6 miles east near Ridge Crest. Midwest City Town Center Plaza is 7 miles southeast, providing retail spots like Lowe’s and Target. But Culture Coffee and Bistro 46 are situated within the JFK neighborhood. “The owner of Culture Coffee also owns Bistro 46,” Human says. “The coffee shop closes, and the bistro opens. It’s pretty neat.”

Next-door neighbors with Bricktown
Proximity to trendy neighboring districts and hot spots gives JFK a leg-up on surrounding OKC suburbs. “The neighborhood is actually pretty close to Bricktown, which has cool bars, breakfast places and coffee shops,” Human says. Just 2 miles southwest of JFK, Bricktown is known for its eclectic, repurposed warehouse spaces. Folks can hop on a canal cruise or see a Dodgers Game at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Residents might enjoy a show or film at the historic Auditorium at the Douglass, or browse the Old Paris Flea Market, open for over 40 years.
Historic schools named after civil rights activists
Students in JFK attend Oklahoma City Public Schools, beginning at Thelma R. Parks Elementary. Enrolling kindergarteners through fourth graders, the school receives a C-minus on Niche. Ranking the same, F.D. Moon Middle School enrolls grades 5-8. Originally established in 1919, the school was named after local teacher and civil rights activist, Frederick Douglass Moon, whose legacy impacted the integration of the JFK neighborhood. Frederick Douglass High School, home of the Trojans, also earns a C-minus on Niche, offering students the opportunity to engage in athletics. The Trojans basketball team has won 11 state championships.

Celebrate Juneteenth in Booker T. Washington Park
Booker T. Washington Park, originally opened in 1924, hosts community events like the Juneteenth Music and Arts Festival, an ode to the community’s rich history. Regatta Park is a few miles south, along the 7-mile stretch of the Oklahoma River. The Oklahoma Regatta Festival is a celebration of watersports overlooking the Devon Boathouse and Chesapeake Finish Line Tower. Residents can partake in rowing and canoe training at the $10 million boathouse or check out the rowing racecourse from the tower’s 12-foot glass windows. Relaxed weekends might mean visiting the James E. Stewart Golf Course or hitting the Willa D. Johnson Recreation Center, which features a gym, pools and a playground.

EMBARK transit and OKC thoroughfares
The EMBARK transit system runs buses and street cars throughout Oklahoma City, with stops along NE 4th Street, N Lincoln Boulevard and N Martin Luther King Avenue. Though the JFK neighborhood is practically in the heart of OKC, walkability remains limited. Folks can expect to rely on public transportation or local thoroughfares for commuting. Thankfully, Interstate 235 connects to both I-44 and I-40, which takes travelers further into Downtown OKC. I-35 is also convenient for those traveling north toward Forest Park. Will Rogers World Airport is around 13 miles southwest, while The University of Oklahoma Medical Center borders the neighborhood to the north.

Important to Know
The JFK neighborhood has a history of segregation that continues to affect its present. Historical redlining has resulted in the location of asphalt plants and metal recycling yards in close proximity to the neighborhood, affecting residents’ health and quality of life. The University of Oklahoma has joined with local residents to challenge the city to create a safer, quieter, more peaceful environment free from the effects of heavy industrial zones.
